Description

2%; 850,162 .PATENTED APR. 16, 1907.
. N. JEN I GS,
APPLICATION TILED FEB-15, 1907.
Qf/VVENTORI NILE JENNINGS, OF CORMORANT, MINNESOTA.
PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907.
Application filed February 15, 1907. Serial No. 357.658.
To all whom 2125 777/112] concern:
Be it known that I, NILE JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cormorant, in the county of Becker and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Flow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to plows; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable wear plate or strip adapted to be applied to the landside of a plowshare and which may be moved and adjusted when a new point is applied to the share in order that the lower edge of the landside may be flush or level with the lower edge of the oint or the lower edge of the landside may e inclined with relation to the lower edge of the point. As the landside is subjected to the greatest wear at its rear end, the said adjustable plate is hardened at such rear end and the metal is thickened transversely in order to present greater wearing-surface, and consequently preserve the integrity of the plate for a maximum length of time.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the landside of the plowshare. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the reverse side of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same cut on the line 8 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the rear end of the stri attachment.
'I he landside 1 of the plowshare is provided at its lower portion and upon its inner side with the laterally-extendmg bolts 2. Said bolts 2 pass through the bar 3, which lies fiat against the rear surface of the said landside 1. The bar 3 is provided at its forward end with a projecting shank 4, which extends beyond the forward end of the land side 1 and also extends below the lower surface thereof. Said shank 4 is adapted to support a plow-p'oint. (Not shown.) The adjustable strip 6 is located under the lower edges of the landside 1 and bar 3, and the rear end of said strip is hardened and increased in transverse dimension, as at 7. As the said rear end of the strip 6 is subjected to the greatest amount of friction,'it is advantageous that the said portion of the strip be hardened and thickened transversely, whereby it is enabled to better Withstand the wear incident to such friction. The lugs 8 are fixed to the inner side of the strip 6, and each said lug is provided with an elongated perforation 9, vertically disposed, and which receives a bolt 2. The tap 10 when screwed upon the said bolt fixes the lug 8 with relation to the landside 1.
From the foregoing description it is ob vious that the strip 6 may be adjusted vertically with relation to the landside 1, and as the rear end of said strip wears the said rear end may be lowered in order to preserve the entire lower edge of the strip in alinement with the lower edge of the point, or the said rear end of the strip may be raised or lowered in order to pitch the lower edge thereof at a desired angle with relation to the lower edge,
of the point. Also, the said strip may be lowered into alinement with the lower edge of a new point when the same is placed upon the share. Thus it is evident that the said late will relieve the landside 1 of all wear at its edge, and as the strip may be rovided at small cost and easily applied t e landside may-be kept in proper condition for an indefinite period and at minimum expense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lowshare having a landside, a bar attache thereto and having a point-supporting shank, a strip lying under the under edges of the landside and bar and being capable of vertical adjustment along its entire length.
2. A p'lowshare having a landside, bolts attached thereto, a bar located upon said bolts and having a shank which projects in advance of the forward edge of the landside and below the lower edge thereof, a strip lying under the lower edges of the landside and said bar, said strip having vertically-disposed lu s provided with elongated perforations w ich receive said bolts.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' NILE JENNINGS.
