BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 9, 1907.
Application filed September l, 1906. Serial No. 332.902.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SMiTH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Nicetown, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottles; and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple and reliable means for closinor the mouth of a bottle and to prevent the refilling of the bottle, except by special means, like a siphon or injector.
Another object ofmy invention is to provide a bottle with a mouth opening laterally at the side of the neck to be closed by awedgelike stopper, which can only be withdrawn by pressure upon the side of the stopper in one direction.
The foregoing objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation ofl a bottle made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a bottle, and 2 is the neck thereof. s shown in the drawings, the 'bottle and neck are round and of the usual contour; but it will loe understood that the bottle and neck may be of any suitable shape. An opening is formed laterally through the neck 2 of the bottle, and this opening is larger at one side of the neck than the other, as shown in Fig. 1, and a cork or stopper 3 of wedge shape is inserted laterally in the opening and fits snugly the inclined surfaces 4 of the opening. The top portion 5 of the bottle is formed integral with the neck and is connected by side portions 6 with the lower portions '7y of the neck. The cork or stopper 3 closes the opening 8 in the neck of the bottle.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that when the cork or stopper 3 is pushed laterally outward to disengage it from the bottle the latter cannot be relled eXcept by means of a Siphon, an injector, or other special device made for the purpose. Moreover, should the bottle be iilled with a carbonated or effervescing liquid the pressure from within the bottle would have a tendency to force the stopper against the integral top portion 5 of the bottle, but there being no lateral pres sure from within the bottle the stopper would retain its position against displacement.
The stopper 3 may be provided with notches c in the opposite sides thereof to engage the inner walls of the side portions 6, and thus lock the cork or stopper in position.
A bottle made in accordance 'with my invention may be used to advantage for conltaining various liquid substances, is simple in construction, can be produced at slight cost, and will be found very efiicient for its purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- A bottle provided with a plain neck having an opening extending laterally through the same, a flat integral upper end or top, inte gral side portions connecting said top and the body portion of said neck, the inner surfaces of said side portions being rounded, and one side of said openin being larger than the other, and a wedge-s aped stopper fitted into said opening, said stopper being vprovided with notches in its opposite sides to engage the inner walls of said integral side portions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
