Be it known that I, MILTON JOHNSON, a citizen Of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Overalls, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to an improvement in overalls, and particularly to a means for reinforcing the crotch portion of the garment, the reinforce portions being utilized as an additional leg width.

As is well known to the manufacturers of these garments, it is practically impossible to out two leg-patterns from a single width of the material, so that as ordinarily constructed more orless waste of material is occasioned. It Is the object of the present invention to so cut the material as to provide two integral leg portions of the greatest possible width and insert between the edges of said leg portions an additional stri to complete the leg, thereby giving the fu lness desired The additional the leg and overlap each other at the crotch portion of the garment, thereby providing an effective reinforce at this part of the garment. The specific details of the invention willbe described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to theaccompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of overalls constructed in accordance with my invention. Referring to the drawings, my improved overalls, with the exception of .the details hereinafter noted, are constructed in any usual or preferred manner. The leg portions 1 are cut from the material to utilize the full width of the latter in forming the cloth for both legs. By this construction the legs are not of the desired-size or fullness, though the operation is an economic one, as I am thereby enabled to use the full width of the material without waste.

To secure the desired Width or fullness of the leg, I insert a strip 2 of the material, which is of a length to extend from the bottom of the leg to and beyond the crotch-line of the garment. .The strip is secured by suitable stitching 3 to the edges of the leg material throughout the length of the leg and is preferably of a gradually-increasing width from the leg-bottom to the crotchline. By this means the leg is given the desired fullness, the inserted strip extending from the bottom of the leg to and beyond the crotch-line of the garment and being of a gradually-increasing width from its lower end.

At the crotch-line of the garment the lapped ends of the strips 2 are securely stitched to each other, preferably by a line of trans verse stitching 4 .and'also by a cross-line of diagonal stitching 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The material of the garment adjacent the lapped portion of its strips is securely stitched to said lapped portion, thereby providing a double thickness of material at the crotch, which material forms part of a practically endless strip extending from one legbottom to the other.

The double thickness of material at the crotch, coupled with the fact that said material forms part of a strip extending the full length of the leg, provides an efiective rein force at the crotch, as the strain is transmitted lengthwise the unbroken strips 2 and the wear is efiectively taken up by the doubled or lapped ends of the strips.
