COMBINATION CHAIR AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 9, 1907.
Application filed July 20, 1906. Serial No. 327,065.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL O. IIOFFMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combination Chair and Table, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device in which is combined a chair and a back which may be converted to form a tabletop, a particular feature being the means for su porting the chair-back so that it can be quic ly detached and placed on top of the chair-frame to form a table.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the device as used for a chair. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken through one side of the chair. Figs. 3 and 4 are details in perspective of the attachments.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 refers to a chair having a removable and adjustable back 14, side arms 11, and rear legs 12, each of which has an upper part 12 extending above the seat and supporting the arms. The back is detachably connected to these parts 12 by the following devices:
13 is a plate which is attached to each member 12 at its rear side over a recess 12 This plate is provided with screw-holes 13 and is slotted longitudinally or vertically, as at 13 and has a transverse slot 13 near the lower end and one or more side recesses or slots 13 near the upper end.
14L is a plate attached to the back 14 of the chair, one being used at each side of the back and opposite the plates 13. This plate 14 has at its lower end a depending tongue or flange 14 provided with lateral studs or projections 14 and at its upper end the plate has a downwardly-presented hook or curved finger 149 WVhen the back is attached to the members or uprights 12 at the rear of the chair the studs 14 are inserted in the cross-slot 13 and then slid down the lower end of the vertical slot 13 permitting the tongue 14 to be received in the slot. The hook or finger 14 may now be inserted in one of the slots 13*, which will engage the same and hold the back securely on the chair with the back in an upright position. There are two slots 13, so that the plate can be reversed, if desired. To release the back from its vertical position and convert the same into a table-top, the back is slightly raised vertically. This disengages the hook 14 from the slot 13 raising the back still farther the studs 14' will be brought opposite the slot 15 and may be disengaged from said plate by pulling the back outwardly. The back may now be turned over and placed on top of the chair, so as to form a table, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
I claim The combination with a chair-frame having rear members with recesses in the rear faces thereof and plates over said recesses having upper and lower slots, the latter having cross-slots 13, of a removable back convertible to form a table, having plates on the under side thereof with upper and lower projections engageable in the slots, the lower projection having lateral studs 14 the slots being different distances apart than the projections.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL O. HOFFMANN.
