COMBINATION INCUBATOR AND BROODER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed May 16,1906. Serial No, 317,086.
and Brooders, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion is an improvement in combination incubators and brooders, and consists in certain novel constructions and com binations of parts hereafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming part hereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combined incubator and brooder. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the incubator. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the incubator, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the incubator-top.
In the present embodiment of my invention the incubator comprises a body portion a. suitably supported by legs a, the casing being closed by a door a, hinged to the casing, as at a and retained in closed position by the thumb-screws a A portion of the door is removed to form an opening at one side thereof, and within this opening is hinged a second door a", the said door being retained in closed position by a thumb-latch (L of ordinary construction and engaging the side of the casing.
The casing comprises an outer wall a and an inner wall a spaced apart from the outer wall to form an air-space, the said inner wall being supported by blocks a arranged upon the sides and bottom of the outer casing, and between the two walls is arranged an asbestos partition (t the said partition being spaced apart from both walls, whereby to form a dead-air space upon each side thereof.
A lamp B, having a flue b, rests upon a bracket (1 secured to the side of the casing at the lower edge thereof, and a boiler I) is supported above the lamp, the said boiler being provided with a tube 5 for receiving the flue of the lamp. The boiler comprises a base I)", an inner wall b connected with the base, and an outer wall 6 also connected with the base and inclosing the inner wall. The space between the tube and the inner wall is adapted to contain the water to be heated, and leading from the upper part thereof is a water-pipe N, which extends through an opening in the side of the casing. \Vithin the casing the said pipe b branches to the right and left, as indicated at b N, passes along the side of the casing at 1) b to the 0pposite end thereof, and from thence inwardly along the opposite wall for a short distance and then returns to the place of beginning in a slightly lower plane. Just before leaving the casing the pipes join, and after leaving the casing they dip downward to communicate with the lower portion of the boiler.
The tube 1) of the boiler is provided with a plurality of openings 1), communicating with the space between the inner and outer walls of the boiler, and at the upper portion of the boiler is arranged a tube 1), extending through both walls, whereby the boiler may be filled.
A thermostat C of any preferred form is connected with the lamp, the said thermostat being actuated to open the flue b of the lamp at certain temperatures, whereby to regulate the heat within the casing.
A brooder D rests upon the upper face of the incubator, the said brooder comprising a rectangular frame 01 of a size equal to that of the cross-section of the incubator and a top (1, hinged, as at (i to the frame, the frame being provided with air-holes d, whereby to provide for the proper ventilation of the casing. Forming a part of the brooder is a runway (1, extending beyond the casing and comprising a base (Z having secured thereto sides and ends (Z of wiremesh and covered in with a top d. The base has hinged to the outer ends thereof legs at, suitably braced by braces d, and the brooder is secured to the incubator by hooks (Z secured to the brooder and engaging suitable staples on the incubator. A hood d is arranged above the tube of the boiler, and leading from the hood is a hot-air pipe (Z extending through the brooder, near the upper face thereof, and
' opening at one side, as clearly shown in Fig.
1. The pipe (1 extends inwardly from the hood (i and follows the edge of the brooderopening on the opposite side from the runway.
In the operation of my invention when the chicks commence to hatch the brooder is placed in position on the incubator and the chicks as hatched removed thereto, thus utilizing all the waste heat from the lamp in warming the brooder.
It will be evident from the description that the heatingpipes of the incubator are arranged above the egg-trays a and that in the brooder the heating-pipes are above the chicks. The space between the walls b 17 0f IIO the boiler provides a dead-air space, thus diminishing the loss of heat by radiation from the boiler-Walls.
I claim- 1. A combined brooder and incubator, comprising a casing provided with egg-trays for containing the eggs, a boiler, pipes connected with the boiler and arranged above the trays, a heater for the boiler, a brooder resting on the incubator and having a runway extending 'therebeyond, a hood above the heater, and pipes leading from the hood to the brooder whereby to heat the same.
2. A combined brooder and incubator, comprising a casing having trays for containing the eggs, a boiler, pipes connected with the boiler and arranged above the trays, a heater for the boiler, a brooder resting on the incubator and having a runway extend- 2o ing therebeyond, and a pipe connected with the heater and extending through the brooder near the upper face thereof.
3. An incubator comprising a casing for receiving the eggs, a brooder resting on the incubator, a boiler com rising a casing having inner and outer Wal s spaced apart from each other, and a tube extending through the center of the boiler, a lamp having its flue eX- tending into the tube, said tube having perforations communicating with the space between the inner and outer walls of the boiler, water-pipes leading from the boiler into the incubator, a hood above the tube,
and a pipe leading from the hood to the brooder.
