Description
s@ uii 51mm @anni EDl/VIN H. SAMPSON, OF BOSTON, IVIASSACHUSETTS. rlaren: Para: No. 84,909, am@ December 15, i868.
IIVIPROVED CLAMP FOR SUSPENDING- PASTEBOARD AND OTHER FABRICS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be itkuown that I, EDWINH. Samson, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Clamp for suspending Paste- Aboard, &c.,while being dried, of which the followingis a ill, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whichl Figures l and 2 are perspective views of my improved clamp.
' In the ordinary operation of drying pasteboard under cover, it has been the custom to suspend it by clamps hung upon a wire extending horizontally across the drying-room, each clamp consisting of two jaws closed to gether by'a spiral spring placed between them. These clamps require to be removed in order to attach them to the paste-board, after which they are again hooked over the wire to suspend the pasteboard till dry.
By this method much valuable time is lost, two persons-being generally employed, one to attach the clamps to the pasteboard, and the oth er to carry it tothe wire, and hang it thereon.
In addition to this objection, the spring is liable to become weakened to such a degree that the clamp is incapable of holding the pasteboard, and is rendered worthless. Y
To overcome the above-mentioned difficulties is the object of my invention, which consists in a stationary and a movable jaw connected by a frame, which may be permanently secured in place, so that it is simply necessary to carry the sheet under the clamp and insert its upper edgebetween the jaws, the movable jaw, after beingslightlypressed back by the entrance of the sheet, closing down by its own weight against the pasteboard, and'holding'it firmly as desired, the degree of pressure exerted by the movable jaw upon the sheet corresponding to the weight of the sheet to be suspended thereby.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner iu which I have carried it out.
In iig. l of the said drawings, my improved clamp is shown in the position it occupies when holding one end of asheet of pasteboardto be dried.
A. is the franie-work, consisting of a bent or bifurcated arm, the lower end of' the portion, a, of which terminates in a iat stationary jaw, B, while the lower' end of the portion, b, lhas pivoted thereto, at c, a movable jaw, C, the inside, Il, of which, is serrated or notched,
in order that a firmer hold may be taken upon the sheet of pasteboard D, confined between the jaws.
The outer end of the movable jaw is provided with aprojection, e, to place the finger thereon, 'when itis desired to 'throw the movable jaw back from the pasteboard, to allow of its being removed when dry. (See 2.)
gA pin or stop, f, projects from the side of the frame, and' prevents the movable jaw C from being thrown back beyond a point where it would not return to its closed position by its own weight after the pasteboard has been removed.
The upper end oi'the frame A is recessed out for the reception of the head of a screw, g, which is pivoted thereto at 71., so that when the clamps are screwed into the beams in the dryiugroom, they may yield laterally, to allow of the shrinkage of the sheet between them when drying. t
By the employment of my improved clamp, one perton may in a ready and convenient manner lift the wet pasteboard and carry it, by taking hold of its edges, to the row of clamps, when it is raised so as to enter it between the jaws of each of two contiguous clamps, each edge, as it is entered between the jaws of a clamp,
, causing the movable jaw to be throw-niback, after which it closes down upon the pasteboard, and binds it seourely against the stationary jaw.
Instead of attachingeach clamp permanently to the beam by means of a screw, it -may be provided with a swivelling connection, or the upper end of a clamp Inay be provided with a hook or eye, to allow of its being hunr u or removed should occasion re uire but I I 1. prefer the construction first described, as, by it, the
operation of suspending the sheets is much facilitated.
It is evident that my improved clamp, besides being employed for holding pasteboard of leather, straw, 85o.,
may be used to advantage in holding other materials for drying, or for other purposes, without departing from the spirit of my invention. A v
Claim. Whatl claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I -The jaws B C and frame A, when combined and arranged substantially as and for the purposes described.
EDWIN H. SAMPSON.
