To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HUToHEs, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, Manhattan, county and .5 State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Paper- Feeder's for Type-Writers, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to means for removing the old sheet and feeding a new sheet to a type-writer when the writing on the old sheet has been finished. The sheet-feeding mechanism is actuated by a key upon the depression of which the old sheet is removed anda new sheet is drawn out of a magazine and properly positioned upon the platen. The letter a indicates the casing of a typet which is separate from and latter is provided with the usual reciprocating carriage b, in which the printing roller or platen b is rotatably mounted. The means for automatically turning the platen for oneor more line-spaces are not shown and do not form part of this invention. Means, hereinafter described, are, however, shown for imparting a turn to platen b when a written sheet is to be removed and replaced by a blank sheet; For this .purpose I mount in carriage b a feed-roller c, which is arran ed 7 parallel and in proximity to platen b R0 ler -c is rotated from the latter by frictional contact, which contact may be increased by providing roller 0 with a covering 0 of rubber or other resilient material. The ratchet connection between headi and spindle i permits the platen b to be rotated independently from the above-described mechanism at the commencement of each new line of the writing.
The means for coupling worm-wheel e to shaft e are as follows: The hub e of wheel 6' is notched, as at a to form one member of a clutch or coupling, the other member of which consists of a correspondinglynotched tube 6, slidably mounted on shaft e. The record m, hereinabove referred to, passes first underneath a record-feed roller-n, then partly around a grooved rollero, and finally back over feedroller n. The rollers 'n and 0 are rotatably mounted in a block a, forming part of the operator-frame a. Above the roller n is arranged a rubber-covered pressure-roller a, so
it n will be ositively taken along. For op erating the eed-roller a I provide a swinging cross-bar p, hung in a pair of levers p and arranged directly beneath keys Z Z of the operator. The levers p are pivoted to the op crater-frame a at p and are located at both sides of such frame, (only one lever being shown in the drawings.) It will be seen that by depressing key 1 bar 19, together'with pawl l, will be lowered to turn ratchet-wheel n and feed-roller n. After the nose 9. has thus turned wheel n for the distance of one tooth n it will be pushed out of engagement with wheel a by the point of the next tooth n". Thus the wheel a and consequently record 'm, will be arrest-ed, while key 1 may be still further depressed. This further descent of key Z causes the record m to be punched in the following manner:

To adapt the feed mechanism to papers having differently sized head spaces, the

controlled clutch, and means controlled by the clutch-for .operatively connecting said shaft to the roller-rotating meanson the carriage, substantiall as specified.
