-Be it known that I, Ennni W. GIBBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lniprovements. in Tops; and I do hereby declarethatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description'of the same, reference being had to the accompanying dra'wing', making a part of this specificationl` and to the nuinerals and figures of reference marked thereon, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the top, showing the holder removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the holder partially ,detaohed or disconnect-ed from the top eX- cept the actuating-spring; v Fig. 3 is a Vertical section showing all of the parts assembled and connected together. Fig. 4 is a plan top view of the top-body. Fig. 5 is a detached view showing the different parts of the topbod)T proper, showing the top handle or stem and the spindle connected' together, or all of the parts in position to be connected asillustrated in Figi. 3. Fig. 6 is a bottom or under side view of the holder and its spring, also showing the top-engaging pin or point. Figi. 7 is a Vertical section of the top-handle, showing' the spindle and the`air-closing disk properly connected.
The present invention has relation to improvements in tops especially designed to be used in connection with Springs for iinparting a rapid rotary movement to' the topbody; and it consists iii the novel arrangement liereinafter deseribed, and partieularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing, l represents the top member, and 2 the lower member, of the top-body, which members oonsist of two piece's or halves preferably forined of metal and stamped or pressed into the desired form .to produce a top-body when the two Sections 1 and 2 are connected together, The top-section 1 is provided with the integral raised portion or part 3, which integral raised part is fot` the purpose of pi'oviding a means for connecting the disk 4, so tha't a Chamber or space will be r 7 formed between the top surface of the disk 4 and the under surface of vthe integral raised part 3, as best illustrated in Fig. 3. spring 8 is held between the head 9 and theV disk 10, said disk being securely connected in anyconvenient and well-knowgii'manner to the holder or spring twisting-head 6. iTo
the holder or twisting-head 6 is attached the sprin 11 by means of a short nail or equivalent eizice 12. The spring, 11 is located in the holder 6, and its lower convolution eX- tended belovii or beyond the connecting end of the holder 6 and provided with the hook 13, which hook is for the purpose of engaging one of the apertures 14, forined in the integral raised portion 3. 'Ihe top handle or stem 15 is located through the aperture 1`6, its bottoin or lower end seated snugly against the top or upper face of the disk 4, as best ill'ustrated' in Figs. 3 and 7. The top liandle IOO Iders ;can be carried. out regardless of their searned or connected together, and in order or Stern 15 is provided with the recess 17, which recess is formed of suflicient depth to properly connect the top or upper end of the spindle 18 to said handle or stem 15. 'the spindle 18 is provided with shoulders 19 and 20, which Shoulders are preferably 'formed by flattening the spindle 18; but this manner of forrning the Shoulders is mechanical, and .l do not desire to be contined to any particular manner of'forming the Shoulders 19 and 20, as the function performed by the shoulforrnation. The top and bottom Shoulders are spaced apart equal to, or substantially so, to the distanoe between the under face of the'disk 4 and the top face of the lower topsectiony 2, reference being had to the plac-ino` 'of suitable reinforoing- washers 21 and 22.
It will be understood that when the topseotions 1 and 2 are brought together their meetin edges should be, and must be, so looated t iat the two Sections can be properly to aocomplish this result and to provide for any. slight Variations the reinforcing-wasliers may be increased either in number or in thickness, but l pre'fer to increase or deoroase the number' of washers and form theI washers of uniforxn thiekness, so that proper adjustment ean be made for the slight Varia'- tions which may be found either in the exact distanoev of the Shoulders between the spindle or'size of the top-Sections l and 2. it is well' understood thatslight difference exist as to the exact size of different' parts, although the parts are intended to be interohangeable one with the other. By my peculiar arranzement in conneeting the spindle and handle, the top-Sections, and the disk 4 together they can all be brought together, and when the top-seetions are properly seamed the elosing of the suarn Will snugly bind all the parts together, so as to produoe a rigid structure, Without sdldering or brazing. By exteinliin;` the top handle or stein through the integral top 3 it will be supported vat a point above its bottom or lower end, and thereby prevent any prying movement or action as between the spindle and the top stein or handle.
In' use the holder 6 is placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 3 and rotated until the spring V11 is brought into proper tension, after which the handle or stern 15 is forced downward, thereby releasing the looking-pin 7 from its engagingirecess or slot, at which time the stored power of the sprinpr imparts a Whirling movement to the top-body by reason of the engagement Aof the hook 13 with one of the apertures 14. 'l'he holder 6 is free to bo rotared in the direetion to compress the spring 11 and is hold against baeliward inovenuant by reason of the looking-pin engaging the end of one of the slots or recesses formed in the integral top poriion 3; but by reason of the end of the looking-pin riding up the inelined bottoin of the slot no resistance is olfered to rotate the holder to wind orslore energy in the springr 1 1.
