To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINCOLN SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing- Boards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ironing-boards; and the invention has for its object to provide novel tilting ironing-board which permits of clothes, as shirts, being easily placed upon the board, whereby bosoms or sleeves of shirts or similar garments can be easily, quickly, and smoothly ironed or pressed.
Another object of this invention is the provision of novel means in connection with my improved tilting ironing-board for maintaining the board in a horizontal position, or in a position to which it is elevated.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel form of iron rest or stand in connection with my improved board.
With these and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved board. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the board. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating a portion of the board in a tilted position in dotted lines, and Fig. 5is a perspective view of a detached spring used in connection with the board.
To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved board of a foundationplate 1, which intermediate its ends is provided with a bracket or standard 2. Hinged to the upper edge of the bracket or standard, as at 3, is a tapering ironing-board 4. The ironing-board 4 tapers, as at 5, whereby when it is tilted its tapering end can be easily placed in the sleeve of a shirt, while the bosom thereof can be supported upon the opposite end of the'board The tapering end of the ironing-board is supported by a post 6, carried by the foundation-plate 1.- The opposite end of the ironing-board is provided with a depending inverted-U-shaped spring 7, having curved sides 8, terminating in hook-shaped ends 9. The sprin 7 is adapted to engage the side arms 10 o a yoke 11, secured to the bracket or standard 2 and the foundation-plate 1.
The end of the foundation-plate 1 is provided with an iron-rest comprising a horseshoe-shaped strip of metal 12, suitably secured to the foundation-plate 1, as at 14.
The spring 7 is adapted to frictionally engage the side arms 10 of the yoke 11 and hold the ironing-board 4 in a tilted or elevated position, whereby a garment can be easily placed in engagement with the ironingboard. When the ironing-board is in a horizontal position, the bracket or standard 2 and the post 6 is adapted to firmly support the board, whereby considerable pressure can be brought to bear upon the same when pressing clothes or garments.
My invention particularly resides in the tilting ironing-board and the means for holding the same in an elevated position. The board is preferably constructed of light and durable wood and may be made of various sizes.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
An ironing-board consisting of a foundation-plate, a bracket or standard carried thereby, a tilting tapering board hinged to said bracket or standard, a post carried by said foundation-plate, and supporting the tapering end of said board when in a horizontal position, a depending spring carried by the opposite end of said board, a yoke secured to said standard and said plate and engaging said spring for holding said board in a tilted position.
