UNITED STATES CHARLES M. CARNAHAN, or NEWPORT, KENTUCKY, ASSIYGNOR TO THE GLOBE-WERNICKE COMPANY, F CINCINNATI, 01110, A CORPORATION OF omo.
EXPANSIBLE E NVELO P FORVERTICAL FILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application'filed January 27,1906. Serial No. 298,257.
Patented March 19,1907.
- filing-cases of that class which are now well knownto the trade as vertical letter-files and vertical filing-cases; and it has for its object the production of a cheap, simple, and eflicient folder or envelop for letters, invoices, or other apers, which may be arranged alphabetical or by. date in their proper envelo s in the rawer intended to hold them in t e cabinet in which the drawer slides and from which the envelops may be removed bodily when filled to a proper index transfer-case, where their contents can be referred to without inconvenience or loss of time.
The novelty of my invention will be herein- I after set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims. p
Inthe accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a sheet of paper, usually stout Manila, cut into a rectangular blank and folded upon itself and brought in to the position ready to be inserted under the die or cutter which completes the folder or envelop. Fig.
2 is a perspective view of the folder or envelop partially opened as in the act of introducing or removing papers therefrom. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the dotted line a: a: of Fig. 2. j The same numerals of. referenceare used to indicate identical parts in all 'of the figures.
I take a blank of stout Manila paper rectangular in formand fold it upon itself ona division-line 1, with one,top edge 2- projecting above the other top edge, sothat the portion 2 of its side or flap is not obscured by theportion3 of the opposite side when the two sides are folded together, as seen in Fig. 2. I
then aste or glue a strip of strong textile ma-' teria 5, such as linen, around the side edges of both flaps, about half-way between the top 4 yand bottom edges thereof. The partial envelop thus formed is next submitted to proper dies, which cut oil portions of the side edges and down through about half-way of the strips 5 on .both sides of the flaps 2 and 3, and also cut out rectangular ortions at the cated by'the dotted lines in Fig. 1. Thezuncut-out portions of the sides of the flaps on a line coinciding with the vertical cut-out side portions are then creased on the vertical dotted lines of Fig. 2 to form bellows' fflapsffon each side of the envelop, and creases on a horizontal line parallel withthe bottom fold 1 of the side flaps are made ,as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, to form a bellows flap at the bottom of the envelop.
'expansible envelop for holding letters or papers in-which the two sides may be distended to give as large a space as required or desired without drawing down the to edges of either flap, which is important in ing-cases containing a number of such envelops, and at the same time, by means of the strips 5 which form reinforcing-gussets on both sides and both side edges of the flaps where they are ,divided from their top edges down to about half-way of the height of said reinforcing-strips 5, I prevent the splitting apart of the envelop at its sides below the cut-out upper portion, which would occur if there were no such reinforcing-strips as these strips 5. 1
The upper projecting edge of the s de flap 2 may be indexed inany suitable manner to in, and. this indexing may be by names of persons, letters of the al habet, as indicated in the drawing, numera s, or by different colors.
The principal feature of my invention, however, and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent, resides in the location of the reinedges of'theenvelop both above and below the horizontal division-line of the separated upper s'ide'edges of the envelop, so; that in handling the envelo hurriedly in taking out for replacing paper t e possibility of tearing apart the envelop below the reinforcing-strips is reduced to a minimum and the life or duration of the envelop is increased to the maximum, as will be readily comprehended.
So faras I am aware no one has ever eon.-
side and bottom edges of bot flaps, as indi-.
It will thus be seen that I'have provided an i indicate the contents of the papers filed thereforcing-strips 5, which embrace both side structed an envelop with reinforcing side strips of the character herein-described, al-
though I am aware that reinforcing-strips of with bellows folds at their bottom odgesand at their side edges below the middle portion thereof with the portilms of the side above the side bellows folds left open, and reinforcing-strips of tougher material than the substance of the envelop, secured on each side thereof and extending both above and below the lowest point at which the fia s are left open at their side edges, substantia 1y as described.
