IMIPROVEMENT m WAGON-BOXES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andmaking part of the same.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, H. Wl PERSING, of Oentralia, in the county of Marion, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Boxes; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, said drawing making a part of this specification.

In the drawing- A A represent the side-boards of a wagon-box, and

B, the end-gate.

The nature of -my invention consists of the device attached to the sideboards and end-gate, viz, the

movable staples ff, passing through the side-boards A A, just behind the end-gate B; the eccentrics e e,

fastened, by means of the bolts 9 g, tothe staples ff on the outside of the side-boards A A; the plates i i, (only one of which is shown in the drawing,) fastened to the side-boards, between the arms of the staples, for the eccentrics e e to'work against; and the rodsc 0, connected by the .swivel (I, which rods 0 0 pass through or may be otherwise fastened to the cleats h It.

' On the ends of the rods cc are hooks, k it, working in the staples ff.

The points on the'eccentrics e e, which rest against the plates 42 i, are flattened, so that they will the more securely remain in position.

The object of the rodsc 0 may be secured by acontinuous rod without the'swivel, the said continuous rod being bent in the middle in any desired shape, or it may be straight.

The object of the swivel d is to take up any slack that may at any time be found, and thus cause a constant strain to be kept upon the hooks k is when the end-gate B and the eccentrics c c are in position.

The object of this invention is to secure the endgate B and the side-boards A A firmly in position, and, at the same time, to allow the end-gate to be readily and easily removed or fixed in place.

This device can be attached-to any end-gate of any style of wagon-box,

It is operated as follows:

To remove the end-gate, raise the handles of the eccentrics e 0, so that the staples ff may be pushed inward, thus loosening the hooks k it from the staples, when the end-gate can be removed. In replacing the end-gate, the hooks it lamust enter the loosened staples f f, when, by turning down the handles of the eccentrics e e, the end-gate becomes firmly fastened in position.

What I claim, is

The combination and arrangement of the eccentrics 0-0, the staples ff, and the swivel cl attached to the rods 0 c, substantially in the manner described, and for the purposes set forth.
