ADJUSTABLE ANCHOR. DEVICE.

I a citizen of the United States of America, and
' *a resident of the-borough of Manhattan, city, Y county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Anchor Devices, of which the following isaspecification. l
My invention'relates in general to means for fastening objects to a wall or body of plastic-material, and'more specifically comprises an improved apparatus for attaching ladders to walls or chimneys formed of what'is known as reinforced concrete. This reinforcedconcrete constructlon comprises a body of plastic cement built up by being placed in forms or molds, and in the case of a tall structure, like a chimney, it isextremely' diificult to place along-series of bolts or anchor-irons therein in process ofconstruction and have the same properly alined when the chimney is complete anda'ladder is attempted to be attached thereto.
-My invention overcgmes these and other difficulties encountered in this and similar attempts to anchor a long exteriorconstruction to a concretewall.
The best form of apparatus embodying'my invention at present known to me is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of the chimney with ladder thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view at right angles to the plane of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of my improved form of anchor-iron with rods or bolts inserted therein, partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through a portion of the chimney-wall and ladder, showing in enlarged detail the coin- .pleted construction with the ladder in place. 4

1 is any formof chimney or other wall 2; the anchor-iron, having a flat-body portion and near either end a pair of jaws 3 3, which form slotted portions of said complete anchor-iron. These jaws extend at right angles to the flat body portion of the'anchor-iron, and each jaw has a keyway 4 formed in its inner surface parallel to the body of the anchor-iron. anchor-iron is laid in the cement; in the p'osition shown in Fig. 6, so that the slots extend to the surface of the chimney-wall. Before inserting each anchor-iron two nuts 55 are placed in position in the keyways 4 4'at the base of the slots between the jaws. The' slotted jaws extending to the surface of the wall, little or no cement gets between them, and such small portions of cement as do creep'in can easily be dug out. After the chimney is completed the threaded rods 6 6 are fished into the anchor-irons and screwed into the nuts 5 5. The ladder 10 is placed in position, the rods and clamps are properly adjusted to hold said ladder straight and true, and the jam-nuts 7 7 and 9 9 are all set uphard, locking the parts firmly in their adjusted positions.
The advantages of my invention comprise the firmness of the anchoring means and the I ease of adjustment in every direction by which a perfect alinement of the ladder or other object to'be supported is secured. If

as to bring all the rods 6 6 in vertical alinement. If the surface of the wall is a little 1 out of true or some of the anchor-irons are embedded a little too deeply or not uite deeply enough, the proper alinement o the ladder with reference to the plane of Fig. 2 can be obtainedby not screwing the rods 6 6 completely into the nuts 5 5 or by adjusting the clamping devices on'these rods 01'' by bothmethods combined. The parts being duplicates and interchangeable, they can be manufactured at small cost and'e'asily assembledQ It is evident that various changes could be made in the details of construction illustratedand described, so long as the underprinciple of my invention is employed.
