This invention is applicable to post-mauls, l Sledge-hammers, mallets, and the like for l the purpose of taking up the jar that is ll cap-piece on the handle and the bolt allow the head to oscillate to some extent when a blow is struck and takes up the jar that is usually communicated from the head to the handle when the tool is used.
claim- 1. The combination with a handle, of a bolt connected to the end thereof, and free to vibrate or oscillate laterally to a limited eX.- tent and a head mounted upon the bolt.
2. The combination with a handle, of a head, a bolt connecting the head and handle, and having limited lateral vibration with respect to the handle and a spring between the bolt and the head.
3. The combination with a handle having a cap on the end thereof, of a bolt the head of which is held loosely under the cap and the usually carried from the head to the handle when striking with such maul or mallet.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the post-maul. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the same. Figs. 3 and a are sections of the handle on the lines 3 3 and 4 4, respectively.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 refers to the handle, which has a cap-piece 11, provided with clips 11a, between which the end of the handle is bolted. The top of this cap-piece is convex or slightly rounded, as at 11b, and has a central hole 11C. Between the top of the cap-piece and the end of the wooden part of the handle is a space 10a.
12 is a bolt which extends through the body of which projects therefrom, a strikinghead mounted on the projecting part of the bolt, and a spring between the bolt and the striking-head.
4. The combination with a handle having a projecting bolt loosely connected to the end thereof, of a head through which the bolt eX- hole in the cap-piece and is held in place by tends, having a recess surrounding the bolt, its head 12a in the space 10a. j and a spring coiled around the bolt in the re- The maul-head 13 has a central or axial l cess, in compression between the head and a bore 13EL on the outer side thereof and an oval l nut on the bolt. aperture 13b on the inner side thereof in n testimony whereof I have signed my which the end of the handle loosely fits, and name to this specification in the presence 0f the partition 13C, between ple 1said outer and two subscribing witnesses. inner recesses has a centra io e 13d through i which the bolt 12 extends. i D CHARLES PALMER 14 is a coiled spring seated in the bore 132". 15 is a washer upon the spring, and 16 an adj Listing-nut outside the washer on the bolt 12.
