Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HARRY S. ISHAM, OF PLATTSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOL-HANDLES.
Specifieation'forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,825, dated December 23, 1879; application filed October 6, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY STEvENs ISHAM, of Plattsburg, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hammers, Mallets, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation in perspective of a hammer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspec tive of the elastic cushion.
The object and purpose of the present invention are to cushion the blow of a hand or power hammer, mallet, ax, or other similar tool in the handle thereof in such a manner that the said handle will not vibrate after the blow is struck, and be relieved from all strain regardless of the force of the blow or blows, thereby preventing the handle from becoming loose or broken from the constant jar and strain of repeated blows.
The invention therefore consistsof a cushion of suitable elastic material, such as rubber, which encircles that portion of the end of the handle located within the eye of the tool-head, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the head of any suitable tool, as hereinbefore described. In the present instance I have shown a hammer to illustrate my invention.
The head A is formed with an eye, a, in
which is placed a band or cushion, B, of rubber, incasing or encircling the upper end, or that portion of the handle 0 entering the eye of the head A. This elastic material forming the cushion may be solid or in sections, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
When a hammer or other similar tool is constructed in accordance with myinvention, one is provided whereby a square face blow may be given of greater force with less propelling power than can be done with a hammer or other similar tool of the usual construction, and, the cushion taking up the strain incidental to the jar of repeated blows, the handle is relieved therefrom and remains firm in the hand without vibrating. The cushion also taking away the jar and strain from the bandle, it is prevented from becoming loose or broken from repeated blows, as would be the case with the handles of the herein-described class of tool not provided with acushion.
Having now fully described my invention, what I" claim as new, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is-
A hand or power hammer, mallet, ax, or other similar tool provided with a cushion of suit-able elastic material encircling the upper end of the handle thereof and disposed within the eye of the tool-head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRY S. ISHAM.
Witnesses:
