DRINKING-FOUNTAIN FOR POULTRY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application tiled April 11,1906. Serial No. 311,018.
' citizen of the United States, residing at liislIO tol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Fountains for Poultry, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in drinking-fountains for poultry, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention has particular reference to that class of drinking-fountains in which a reservoir for the water is provided with a drinking-trough, which forms a seal to prevent more water from passing` out of the reservoir than is consumed by the poultry.
Another purpose of the invention resides g in providing a device which may be attached to an ordinary fruit or preserving jar.
It will be seen from the description that a drinking fountain or trough is set forth which will be clean, simple, inexpensive, and highly efficient in its purpose.
Reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts through the several views, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, portions being broken away to more clearly illustrate the same. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail section ofthe hood-adjusting means.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1
designates the reservoir, which may be an ordinary fruit-j ar of approved type or any other receptacle having a threaded rim to which the device can be attached.
Numeral 2 indicates the drinking-trough and 3 the hood. The trough 2 may be of any desired form and is attached te a hack plate 4. This back plate is provided with a circular opening 5, through which a metal cap G projects, the latter being secured in said opening. This cap is of the ordinary fruit-jar-cap form and is formed with a threaded 'flange 7, within which the neck of the reservoir, in the form of an ordinary fruit-j ar, as aforementioned, is screwed.
The cap 6 at its lower portion below the top edge of the trough is provided with a port 8, through which the water from the l reservoir flows into the trough 2. The side edges of the back plate 4 are turned to form guides 9, and within these guides is arranged a back plate 10, forming a complementary member with the first-mentioned back plate 4. Upon the upper portion of the back plate 10 is provided a hood 3, aforementioned, which overhangs the trough 2. By vertically adjusting the back plate 10 relative to the back plate 4 and within the said guides 9 the distance between the hood and trough m ay be varied to accommodate poultry of different sizes, as desired. This is an important feature of this invention, as it provides a device which may be adjusted for the use of chicks exclusively or for poultry universally.
The back plate 10 is provided with a central cut-out portion 11 to permit clearance of the protruding cap portion 6 in adjusting the i hood. The means for retaining the hood in its adjusted position may consist of any wellknown and approved form of detent, but for the purpose of operativeness a detent is illustrated in Fig. 3 for accomplishing the desired result. This detent consists of a tongue 12, struck out from one of the guide-flanges 9 and bent inwardly to engage in notches 13, formed in one of the side edges of the back plate 10. This tongue may be formed with an extension 14, which may be engaged by the finger of the operator to withdraw said tongue 12 from engagement in the notch to permit adjustment of the hood. Of course it will be understood that this detent is not absolutely essential, as the back plate 10 may be held in its adjusted position by frictional contact with the guide-flanges 9.
Owing to the trough 2 resting on the ground in a horizontal position rolling of the device will be prevented in case a fowl perches upon the reservoir. It will be seen that this device can'not be upset by the poultry, nor can such poultry perch upon the trough, owing to the overhanging hood.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A drinking-'fountain comprising a horizontally-disposed cylindrical reservoir, a removable cap therefor, and a horizontallydisposed trough secured to said cap and resting on the ground to prevent the device from rolling.
2. A drinking-fountain comprising a IOO trough, a hood adjustahly arranged thereoVer, and a reservoir 'for supplying said trough.
3. A drinking-fountain comprising a trough, a hood adjustahbT arranged thereover, and a reservoir 'for supplying the trough, said reservoir and trough restingion the ground to prevent displacement oi: the device.
4. A drinking-fountain comprising awaterreceptacle, a trough connected therewith, a hood shdably mounted on said trough, and means 'for locking the hood to said trough.
5. A drinking-fountain comprising a water receptacle, a trough connected therewith,
guide-flanges formed on said trough, and a' hood slidaloiy arranged in said guide-anges.
G. A drinking-fountain Comprising awaterreceptacle, a trough connected therewith, an extended hack iorined on said trough-seotion, guide-flanges formed on said hack, a hood slidably arranged in said guide-Hanges, and means 'for looking the hood to said trough.
In testimony whereof l aiIiX my signature in presence et two witnesses.
