Be it known that I, ANDREW F. THoMPsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at I-Iornick, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nut-locks; and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide reliable and eflicient means for looking a nut upon a bolt and to permit the nut to be readily readjusted upon the bolt whenever required.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hood or cover for a nut and simple means for locking the hood in position to prevent the nut from turning on the bolt.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bolt and nut-lock made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the nut cover or hood. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same, looking at the inner end of said hood. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line 5 5, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 6 is a front elevation looking at the outer end of the nut-lock. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 7 7, Fig. 6, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the spring locking device.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a bolt provided with a head 2 of usual construction. Threads 3 are formed on the bolt, and projecting from the threaded portion 3 is a rectangular extension 4, said extension being provided with a slot 5. The nut 6 is of the ordinary hexagonal type and is adapted to be fitted to the threaded portion 3 of the bolt 1. A hood or cover 7 is provided with a recess 8 upon its inner side, which is adapted to fit over the nut 6 and cover the same. opening 9 is formed in the outer wall of the hood, and the squared portion 4 of the bolt extends through said opening and terminates substantially flush with the outer face of A rectangular said hood. The upper side of the outer end of said hood is cut away, as at 10, to form a shoulder 11, and formed in the shoulder portion 11 is a transverse slot 12. A fiat key 13 is fitted in the slot 12 of the hood, and said key extends into the slot 5 of the squared portion 4 of the bolt, said key having oppositely-disposed heads 14, as shown more particularly in Fig. 5. To hold the key 13 in place, a spring-lock (shown in Fig. 8) is inserted in the upper portion of the aperture 9 upon the upper surface of the squared portion 4 of the bolt, said locking device comprising a short spring-tongue 15, an outwardly-extending arm 16, and an oppositely-disposed shorter arm 17. The spring tongue 15 is adapted to engage the outer wall of the slot 12 to hold the key 13 in place, and the extended arm 16 forms a finger-hold to withdraw the look when the springtclmgue 15 is depressed in the plane of the p ate.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a nut-lock made in accordance with my invention will hold a nut in rigid position upon the bolt and that the hood may be removed from the nut and the nut readjusted whenever required.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- 1. A nut-lock comprising a bolt having a squared outer end, said squared outer end having a slot therein, a nut fitted to the bolt, a hood or cover for said nut, said hood provided with a slotted outer end, a key inserted in the slots of the hood and squared end of the bolt, and a spring for locking said key in place, substantially as described.
2. A nut-lock comprising a bolt having a squared outer end, a nut fitted to said bolt, a hood fitted to said nut, a key for locking said hood to said bolt and nut, and a spring locking device provided with a springtongue for holding said key in place, substantially as described.
