ELIZABETH HAWKS, or
VINELAND, NEW JERSEY.-
Lettcrs Patent No. 84,625, dated December 1, 1868.
To all whom it may concern: 1 1
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH HAWKS, of Vine, land, in the county of Cumberland, and in the State of New Jersey, havein'vented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a stove, by which the lower part, or base, can be. heated at will. 7
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form'a part of this specification, and-in which- Figure l is a sectional side elevation, and
Figure 2, a plan view, part in section.
A represents the base of my stove, which is provided with a double bottom, as seen in fig. 1, and the upper part thereof divided into two chambers by means of a partition, B. The top of the base, A, is provided with a. circular hole, from which projects a circular flange, O.
The stove itself consists af two cylinders, one outer,
D, and one inner, E, forming an air-chamber between them, and are connected at the rear. side by two upright plates, F E, which thus form a flue which fits exactly over the opening to the rear chamber of the base, A.
Inside of the inner cylinder E, is the fire-box H, which is provided with a grate, G, the fuel being put infrom the top.
The chamber between the two cylinders D and E is closed at the top, the inner cylinder being lower than the outer, and the top of the inner cylinder E is closed by the cover I, which is provided with draught-holes that may be opened or closed at' will. Atthe rear side of the inner cylinder E is a hole, near the'top, through which the smoke passes out, and into the pipe J. The hole in the inner cylinder, for the smoke to pass out, may be closed by a damper, K.
When the fire is made in the stove, and thedraughtholes a a, in the front part of the base, A, open, the smoke, &o., passes out through'the hole in the inner cylinder,'and through the pipe J, the damper K being open, and the draught-holes in the cover I closed. The lower part or base, A, is not heated, but if it is desired to heat that, then close the draught holes a a, and open the draught-holes in the cover I. It will then'be seen thatthe heat, smoke, 8tc., will pass downward into the front chamber of thebase, A, thoroughly heating the same.
.-Inorder to provide an outlet for the heat, smoke, 850., the partition Bis provided with holes I) b, which maybeclosed by' the'slides L L. These holes being open, the smoke, 8m, will pass fiom the front chamber of therbase, A, into the rear chamber of the same, thence up through the flue formed out through the pipe J, the chamber between the cylinders D andE at all times being filled with hotair.
To facilitate the passage of the smoke, &c., up the said flue, the lower bottom of the base,'A, is provided .with draught-holes, as well as the upper bottom of the rear chamber. This gives a suflicient current of air to carry the smoke upwards.
' Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I. The base, A, constructed as described, with a partition, B, dividing it into two chambers, and which partition is provided with holes I) b and slides L L, substantially as and for the purposes herein's et forth.
2. The arrangement of the cylinders D and E, and upright plates F F, forming a flue for the passage of the smoke, 850., and leaving the balance of the chamber between said cylinders'for hot air, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 5th day of September, 1868.
ELIZABETH HAWKS.
