To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEORGE NELsoN THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pacific, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in fell-Drilling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a well-drilling machine, and has for its object to provide a simple and easily-operated machine.
A further object is to provide an improved mechanism for alternately lifting and dropping the drill.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5
denotes a derrick in which are supported drums 6 and 7, respectively, the former being for the drill-cable 8 and the latter for the sand-pump line 9. At the top of the derrick are pulleys over which the drill-cable and sand-pump line pass.
In one end of the drumt is a square opening to receive the squared end 10 of a shaft 1 1, having'its bearing in the upright 12 0f the derrick. The shaft is provided with a crank- The other end of the drum is supported on an axle 14, extending into an opening in that end of the drum and having its bearing in the upright 15 of the derrick. The end flange of the drum adjacent the axle 1 1 has a series of transverse openings 16, and
into any one of said openings is secured a pin 17, so as to project from the outside of said flange. The pin is threaded and secured by a nut 18.
Above the drum 6 a shaft 19 is journaled in the uprights 12 and 15, and on said shaft is fixed a cam 20. The shaft is provided with a crank-handle 21 for rotating it; but some other suitable operating means may be provided, such as horse or steam power, by adjusting pulley 0n crank-shaft. From the axle 14 extends radially a curved arm 22, which is in the path of the cam 20. The pin 17 is in the path of the arm 22. The length of the arm is such that it engages the shaft 19, whereby the drum is held against turning to unwind the drill-cable 8.
The object of the cam 20, the arm 22, and the pin 17 is to alternately lift and drop the drill by winding and unwinding the drill-ca ble 8, and the mode of operation is as follows: Upon rotating the shaft 19 the cam 20 swings around with it, and when the cam engages the arm 22 the latter is swung forwardly, which rotates the drum by reason of the engagement of the arm with the pin 17. The rotation of the drum in this direction winds the cable thereon, and thus raises the drill. When the cam has passed the arm 22, the weight of the drill unwinds the cable and the drill drops. The unwinding of the drillcable rotates the drum in the opposite direction and returns the pin 17 and the arm 22 to their first position, the shaft stopping further unwinding of the drill-cable when it is engaged by the arm 22.. As the shaft 19 continues to rotate the operation is repeated.
When the drill is first lowerc d into the well and also when removed therefrom, the pin 17 must be taken off, so that the drum can be rotated to wind or unwind the drill-cable. By providing a number of openings for the pin 17 the feed of the drill can be regulated. The sand-pump line 9 is operated in the usual manner, its drum 7 being provided with a crank-handle 28.
" I claim 1.- In a well-drilling machine, the combination of a shaft carrying a cam, a drum and its axle, a radial arm extending from the axle and into the path of the cam, and a pin extending from the drum and into the path of the arm.
2. In a well-drilling machine, the combination of a shaft carrying a cam, a drum and its axle, a radial arm extending from the axle and into the path of the cam and its shaft, and a pin extending from the drum and into the path of the arm.
3. In a well-drilling machine, the combination of a shaft carrying a cam, a drum and its axle, the drum having a series of holes at a distance from its axis, a pin engageable with any one of said holes, and a radial arm extending from the drum-axle between the pin and the cam.
