To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN VVEsLEY Mo- KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hanover, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined. Cock and Support for Cluster Gas- Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
' My invention relates to a combination cock and burner for incandescent and other gas-burners; and it has for its object to provide an improved construction whereby a series of burners or lights may be turned out in succession, so that any desired number of the series of burners may be employed for illuminating or other purposes with the minimum of friction and maximum of ease at whatever distance the burners may be located from the cock. It also has for its obj ect to provide, in combinationwith such cock and burner mentioned, a continuouslydighted burner for igniting at the proper time a pilotburner, from which the series of the cluster of burners may be li hted, and in which the pilot-burner will )8 automatically extinguished after serving its purpose of lighting the cluster of burners.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other Objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the features hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a p art hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the combined cock and burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation at right angles to Fig. 1 with parts in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the ball or spherical body of the cock with parts in full lines. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the by-pass valve of the pilot-burner, and Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view of the channels and terminals formed in the tapering plug of the main valve for supplying gas to the series of burners and by means of which they may be extinguished in succession.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a ball or globular body portion, through the central portion of which is bored a tapering Opening 2, forming the seat for a tapering plug-valve 3, and through the body portion 1 a number of ports or passages 5 are bored, so as to open into the central bore 2, and designed to have communicate therewith the supporting-arms, which will support or have connected therewith the burners designated. by the numeral 6 and which may be of any approved pattern or type, said supporting-arms being designated by the letters a, b, c, and (Z, of which four are illustated, but of which any desired number may be em ployed, from each of which will lead one of the ports 5, which open into the central bore 2 and which will be controlled by the taper ing plug 3, which will have channels and terminals formed in its body, as hereinafter described, so as to enable the ports or passages 5 to be closed in succession, or to permit all of them to be opened, so as to supply gas to all of the burners of the cluster. The ball-body'l will have a bore 7 made partially through it to receive a gas-supply pipe or tube 8, and the base or bottom of the bore 7 will be formed with an oblong opening 9, opening into the central bore 2, and in the bottom of the ball-body 1. will be formed a bore 10, extending partially into the same to receive a tube or nipple 11 to adapt it to be coupled Or connected to a support or standard for sustaining the ball-body.
The tapering plug-valve 3 is formed with a circumferential groove or duct 12, Which extends partially around the plug and which has leading therefrom longitudinally of the plug the ducts or passage- ways 13, 14, 15, and 16, the passage-ways 13 and 16 having laterallyextending terminals 17 and 18.
When the tapering plug 3 is turned to the limit of its movement in one directionfor instance, to the rightby pulling on the chain 19, attached to a lever 20, secured to the plug, the gas will flow to all of the burners, and the flame will be at all of them. By turning the plug to the left by pulling on the opposite chain 21, attached to the lever 20, the several burners in succession may be extinguished, the burners being extinguished in alternati on from opposite sides of the plug'that is, the burner attached to the arm a being the first one extinguished, then the burner connected with the arm I) is extinguished, then the burner connected with the arm 0, and then the burner connected with the arm d, thus causing the burners directly opposite each other to be extinguished in succession, so that if the burners be used for illuminating purposes the light or flame will be from opposite sides of the ball-body, thus causing a better distribution of the flame or light than would be if the lights extinguished were on the same side. I have illustrated only four burners constituting the cluster; but it is ob vious that the number may be increased and the passage-ways leading thereto be formed so as to supply the gas to the additional burners and cause the burners to be extin guished in succession one at a time as desired. The ball-body will be provided with an indexscalefor instance, such as A-and the tapering plug will be provided with an index-finger 15, so as to indicate the number of burners, lighted 0r extinguished by the position of the index-finger in relation to the scale, which is of advantage if the burners be at a more or less remote point from the controlling-cock, and this index-finger will also serve as a stop to limit the movement of the plug-valve by being brought against the shoulder at the limit of movement of the finger in opposite directions, said shoulders being designated by the numeral 22.
For the purpose of lighting the series of burners from a pilot-light I provide a Bunsen burner 23, which will connect by a pipe 2% with the nipple or coupling 8 of the gas-supply pipe, which Bunsen burner will have a flame continuously'burning, the supply of gas to said burner being controlled by a valve 24. Adjacent to this burner will be the pilotlight 25, which will connect with the nipple or coupling 8 by a pipe 26, thus forming a bypass from the nipple 8 to the pilot-light. This pilot-light will be provided with a c011- 'trolling-plug 27, whose movement may be limited by a set-screw or stop-pin 28. The plug will also be provided with a lever 29, which at one end will be connected by a chain 30 with the chain 19 of the lever 20 of the main cock to the ball-body, the opposite end of the lever 29 being connected by a spring 31 with the ball-body 1. With the parts thus assembled, when the main lever 20 is moved to turn the main controlling-valve 3 6 5 burner being ignited by the flame from the Bunsen burner will cause the gas issuing from the cluster of burners to be ignited, and when tension on the connecting-chain 80 is released the spring 31 will retract the pilot-lever 29 and turn its plug 27 so that the flame from the pilot-burner will be diminished or entirely extinguished, according as the plug 27 is allowed a greater or less movement by the set-screw or stop-pin 28. The pilot-light is thus brought in operation at the proper time to ignite the gas issuing from the cluster of burners and then has its flame diminished or extinguished, so as to avoid the formation of carbon on the cluster of burners, which would be liable to occur if the pilot-light was thus not controlled. The burners 6 of the several arms extending from the ball-body 1 may be approximately near to the ball-body but under the construction described they may be more or less remote from said body by a prolongation of the arms a b c (1 extending from the ball-body, and in such case the Bunsen burner and the pilot-light would be proportionately removed from the ball-body by a simple prolongation of the pipes 24 and 26, which connect theBunsen burner and the pilot-light, respectively, or rather the portions of said pipes to which the burner-tips will be connected, and when such is the case the index-finger and scale before referred to will indicate the number of burners that may be ignited or extinguished.
I have illustrated and described with particularity the preferred details of construction and arrangement of the several parts; but it is obvious that changes can be made therein and essential features of my inven tion be retained.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim is-- 1. A combined cock and support for a cluster of burners comprising a body supporting a series of burner-supporting arms and formed with an inlet for gas and ports lead ing to the series of arms, and a controllingplug fitting in said body and formed on its exterior with a central passage-way to communicate with the gas-inlet and having passage-ways leading therefrom to each of said ports, said passage-ways being formed so that by turning the plug they will be consecutively moved out of communication with said ports to cut ofl in succession the supply of gas thereto, in combination with the pilotburner provided with a controlling-valve for igniting the cluster of burners therefrom, and a Bunsen burner for igniting the gas issuing from the pilot-burner, substantially as described.
2. A combined cock and support for a cluster of burners comprising a body supporting a series of burner-supporting arms and formed with an inlet for gas and ports leading to the series of arms, and a controlling-plug fitting in said body and formed on its exterior with a central passage- 1 Way to communicate with the gas-inletand having passage-ways leading therefrom to 1 each of said ports, said passage-ways being i formed and so located in relation to the ports leading to the several burners that by turning the plug the burners will be extinguished in consecutive alternation from opposite sides of a line drawn centrally through the body-support wherebywhen any two burners are lighted they will be burners opposite to each other and on opposite sides of said line, in combination with a pilot-burner provided with a controlling-valve for igniting the cluster of burners, and a Bunsen burner for igniting the gas issuing from the pilotburner, substantially as described.
3. A combined cock and support for a cluster of burners comprising a body supporting a series of burner-supporting arms and formed with an inlet for gas and ports leading to the series of arms, and a controllingplug fitting in said body and formed with a central passage-way to communicate with the gas-inlet and having passage-ways leading therefrom to each of said ports, said passageways being formed so that by turning the plug they will be moved out of communication with said ports to cut off the supply of gas thereto,in combination with the pilotburner provided with a controlling-valve for igniting the cluster of burners therefrom, and a Bunsen burner for igniting the gas issuing from the pilot-burner, substantially as described.
