Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
T0 fir/Z whom, it T11/ty con/cern:
Be it known that I, MicHAEL BERARDINI, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, county and borough ofy Richmond, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checks, Drafts, and Similar Instruments, of which the 'following is a specification.
My invention relates to commercial instruments-such as checks, drafts, and the likeand has for its object to facilitate and simplify the keeping of proper records by the bank or other party issuing such instruments and also the provision of a proper record for all of the parties concerned in the transaction. y A
I have devised my present improvement with especial reference to thel conditions arising when a customer purchases from a banker a draft to be paid by another banker and where the issuing banker is supposed to advise his correspondent on whom the draft is made of the amount of each draft and certain other particulars. Heretofore a great deal of bookkeeping has been required in such cases, and the object of my present invention is to reduce such bookkeeping to a minimum.
For this purpose my invention consists of certain features fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face view of a draft-pad embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of one of the duplicates, and Fig. 3 is a section taken online 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The improved pad comprises a large sheet A, which is intended to be retained by the issuing banker, one or more smaller sheets B, exactly alike, which are intended for transmission to the bankers correspondent, and, finally, a draft-sheet C of about the same size Ias the sheets B and subdivided by lines of perforations C into a series of draft-blanks C2. These draftblanks are preferably provided with consecutive numbers in the spaces C3, and also have a space C4 for the insertion of the amount, another space C5 for the remitters name, a space CG for the payees name, and a space C7 for the payees residence. This arrangement may of course be varied to suit the individual conditions of the business. The draft-blanks shown are such as have been used by me, though they are not in the usual and well-known form, and it 1s to be understood that any form of draft may be used that will best suit individual requirements.
` whom the drafts are made, withthe date, and
the number of the pad. .Each of the sheets Bis divided by vertical lines B2 into a series of columns, the first of which from the left in Fig. 2 may bear a number, the second the amount designated in dollars, francs, lire, marks, dac., and the third, fourth and fifth may be headed, respectively, Remitten Payee, and Payeesresidence. The said sheets B may be further divided into a series of rows by horizontal lines B3. rlhe lines B3 correspond to the lines of perforations separating the drafts C2 from each other and the lines B2 to the division-lines provided in each draft. The lines on the sheets B might be omitted, as the user will soon bccome familiar with the propermeaning of entries according` lto their position. Under the heading Number the same numbers as are used on the drafts C2 will bereproduced. The last sheet A has a portion which is an exact duplicate of the sheets B and has in addition thereto at the left an extension A.
This extension is subdivided by horizontal lines into a series of spaces which contain the same numbers as the drafts, and also 1s provided wlth a number of blank spaces 1n which various items may be entered, such as' to the drafts, Dand the figures showing the amount of business brought forward from previous pads, as well as the total of the amounts of the pad. The sheets B and C are fastened to the sheet A to the right of the extension A in any suitable manner, as by staples D, and are preferably perforated adjacent to the point where they are secured, as indicated at BS C8.
In using my invention sheets of carbonpaper are placed between each two of the sheets of the pad, and then the drafts C2 are filled out in the customary way. It will be readily seen that the entire writing of the draft is reproduced at once on each of the sheets A and B. The only other entry which IOC IIO
the proper date and pad-number will be written at the top of each sheet B, together with the name of the correspondent. The
sheet B will be torn off and sent to such cor-' respondent, who will thus receive a complete and clear record of all drafts which may be presented to him for payment. In the eX- ample shown there are two sheets B, so that a duplicate may be sent to the correspondent by a different mail, and it will be understood that if triplicate copies are desired three sheets B will be provided and that in some cases one such sheet will be considered suffioient. The writing put at the top of the sheet B is repro duced, by means of the carbonpaper, not only on the duplicate sheet B, but also on the sheet A. This latter sheet is kept by the issuing banker and is of such a nature that it may be readily bound together with other sheets ofthe same kind to form a book which will constitute a complete record of all transactions of this character. The figuring of the totals of the cash received, commission received, and amounts of the drafts expressed both in the currency of the realm and in the currency of the country on which they are issued may be figured and entered as soon as a draft-sheet has been used up or at any convenient time thereafter.
I claim as my inventionl. A pad for drafts and other commercial instruments, consisting of a plurality 4of,
sheets one of which is wider than the others which are secured to said Wide sheet at'a 'distance from one of its edges, suchvother,
narrower sheets comprising a sheet having consecutively-numbered draft-forms, and an.
additional sheet having consecutively-numbered portions, the wider sheet also having consecutively-numbered portions, and the registering or superposed portions of all the sheets being subdivided alike into spaces adapted to receive corresponding entries.
2. A pad for drafts and other commercial instruments, consisting of a wide sheet, another sheet narrower than the first-named sheet and superposed on a portion thereof, and a further sheet of substantially the same width as the second-named sheet but of smaller height, all of said sheets being secured together and the vsuperposed portions of all 4the sheets being subdivided in a like manner so as to receive identical entries in corresponding places by the use of interposed sheets of carbon-paper,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
