UNIT D STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
DAVID HENDERSON OWENS, .OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
PADLOCK- Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed February 21, 1906. Serial No. 302.235.
To, all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID HENDERSON OWENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My present invention relates to improvements in padlocks; and the main object of my invention is the provision of means upon the swinging shackle thereof whereby the same may be placed in closed or locked position more'readily and quickly than can the lock in general use, the said lock being adapted for all classes of use, but more particularly for locking switches, car-doors, or the like. To attain these object, I provide upon the swinging shackle of the padlock a projection, or, in fact, any means which will offer resistance and not slide through the staple or' the like which is engaged by the shackle,
thus allowing the easy swinging or closing of the shackle in a locked position.
In order to more clearly demonstrate my invention and the utility thereof, I have endeavored to show the most practical form of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pad lock, carrying a swinging shackle provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the application of my improvement.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the swinging shackle, which is connected to the padlock 11 in the usual manner. Instead of em loying a shackle that is of uniform size an round and which when being 10 cked requires the use generally of two hands to lock the same I provide upon my shackle a projection or stud 12, which may be at any desired point, but preferably intermediately of the shackle, as clearly shown in the drawings, so that when the shackle is thrust through the aperture 13 of the staple so that the whole force of the oper' lock-body over into engagement with the free end of the shackle, thus allowing the shackle to be closed or locked in an easy and quick manner.
With this improved construction of padlock a great saving in time is aflorded in many places, such as railway operations, and as the device is thoroughly eflicient and practical and the cost of equipping the shackles with the projection or stud so slight it will no doubt commend itself for use in a great many places. It will be noticed that the projection or stud 12 is provided with a gradual incline 12*, by means of which the shackle is easily fed through the staple 14, so that the shoulder 12' of the projection will prevent the shackle from being easily withdrawn and at the same time engage the staple 14 and offer a stop or abutment to assist in pushing the shackle closed or locked. This feature is of great importance.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pad lock, having a swinging shackle provided with an intermediate projection the portion of which near the free end of the shackle being gradually inclined, while the portion near Ithe ivoted end is an abrupt shoulder, as set 'ort 2. As a new article of manufacture, a padlock, having a curved shackle pivotally connected at one side and adapted for connection with the other side of the padlock, said shackle being provided with an outwardlyextending intermediate rojection, whose surface nearest the pivotal end is abrupt and shouldered, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID HENDERSON OWENS.
