DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed November 8. 1906. Serial No. 342,526.
T0 .v1/ZZ whom, it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES II. MATLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emden, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Draft-Evener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to draft-evental position. A draft-bar is slidably mounted upon said stub-tongue, and at the shorter end of said bar is fixed a doubletree carrying two swingletrees, while at the longer end of the said bar is xed a swingletree. A draftlever is fulcrumed to the stub-tongue and is provided at its end with a swingletree which is located at the opposite side of the tongue from the doubletree above mentioned. A pulley is journaled at the rear end of the stubtongue, and a chain or flexible element is attached at one end to the draft-lever and passes around said pulley and is attached at its other end to the draft-bar at a point between the stub-tongue and the doubletree above mentioned.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the draft-evener. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same cut on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the end portion of a plow-beam, showing a portion of the stub-tongue attached thereto and in section.
The draft evener comprises the stubtongue 1, which is bounded on its vertical sides by the metallic strip 2. The said stubtongue 1 is provided at its rear end with a clevis-receiving recess 3 and also with a pulley 4. The pin 5 passes transversely through the clevis 6 and secures the stub-tongue to the said clevis in a substantially horizontal position. The guide 7 is attached to the upper side of the draft-bar 8. The stub-tongue 1 passes between the said guide 7 and said draft-bar. Therefore the said draft-bar may move longitudinally of the stub-tongue 1, and as the said tongue does not fit snugly under the guide 7 the said draft-bar 8 has a limited horizontal swing with relation to the stub-tongue 1. The doubletree is attached to the shorter end of the draft-bar 8, and the swingletrees 10 10 are carried by the said doubletree. The swingletree 11 is attached to the longer end of the draft-bar 8. The lug 12 extends laterally from the side of the stub-tongue l which faces toward the doubletree 9. 'Ihe draft-lever 13 is fulcrumed to the said lug 12 and passes across the top of the stub-tongue 1 and is provided at its opposite end with a swingletree 14. 'Ihe link l5 is attached at its rear end to the fulcrum of the lever 13 and at its forward endto the stub-tongue 1 beyond the forward edge of the guide 7. The chain 16 is attached at one end to the draft-lever 13 at a point substantially in vertical alinement with the longitudinal axis of the stub-tongue 1. Said chain passes around the pulley 4 and is attached at its other end to the draft-bar 8 at a point between the stub-tongue and the doubletree. The connections between the4 swingletrees, the doubletree, the lever, and bar are such as to hold the swingletrees in horizontal position, but at the same time permit the said tree to have horizontal swing. Consequently the trees do not droop and come in contact with the legs of the draft-animals.
An evener thus constructed is not intended to reduce the side draft on gang-plows; but owing to the arrangement of its parts it is intended to bring the strain upon the draftanimals in a straightforward direction.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. vA draftevener comprising a stubtongue for attachment with an implement, a draft-bar supported by the stub-tongue, a doubletree attached to the shorter end of said draft-bar, swingletrees attached to said doubletrees, a swingletree attached to the longer end of said draft-bar, a draft-lever fulcrumed upon the stub-tongue and crossing the same, a swingletree attached to the end of said draft-lever, a pulley journaled upon the stub-tongue and a flexible element attached at one end to the draft-lever and passing around said pulley and being attached at its other end to thepdraft-bar.
2. A draftevener comprising a stubtongue, a draft-barsupported by the stubtongue, suitable trees attached to the draftbar, said stub-tongue having a pulley, a link pivoted to the stub-tongue, a draft-lever fulcrumed to the link, a tree attached to said IOC IIU
draft-lever, a iexible member secured at one end to the draft-lever 'and passing around said pulley and being secured at its other end to said draft-bar.
3. A draftevener comprising a stubtongue, a draft-bar supported by said stubtongue and mounted for movement longitudinally thereof, a pulley journaled to said stub-tongue, a link pivoted to the stubtongue, a draft-lever fulcrumed to the link and a flexible member attached at one end to the draft-lever and passing around said pul ley and being attached at its other end to said draft-bar.
4. A draft-evenerv comprising a stubtongue, a draft-bar supported by the stubtongue and mounted for movement longitudinally thereof, a pulley journaled to the stub-tongue, a link pivoted 'to the stubtongue, a draft-lever fulcrumed to the link and a flexible element attached at one end to said draft-lever and passing around said pulley and being attached at its other end to the draft-bar at a point to lone side of the stubtongue.
5. A draft evener comprising a stubtongue, a draft-bar supported by said stubtongue and mounted for movement longitudinally thereof, a pulley journaled to said stub-tongue, a lever fulcrumed to said stubtongue and a flexible element attached at one end to said lever substantially in vertical alinement 'With the longitudinalaXis of the stub-tongue and passing around said pulley and being attached at its other end to the draft-bar at a point to one side of the stubtongue.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my oWn I have hereto aiiiXed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
