DRAFT-EQ UALIZER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Paten/t No. 357,832, dated February 15, 1887.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Stark and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers, of which This invention relates to draftequalizers, and it consists in constructions and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure lis a top plan; Fig. 2, a top plan with the doubletrees, single-trees, and equalizing-chain removed; Fig. 3, a front elevation of the draft-bars and bracket B, and section of the tongue; Fig. 4, a detail, a plan of the slotted bracket.

Referring to the drawings by letters, the saine letters indicate the saine part in the different figures. i

A represents the tongue of a harvester or grain-binder, which is supposed to be located with reference to the inaehinein such manner that there will be, when in use, a side draft tending to pull the tongue nto the left hand, as is common in this class of machines.

B is a bracket formed of barsb b, bolted to the side of the tongue at one end to project in a direction from thel tongue opposite to which the side draft of the machine draws the tongue. The outer ends of the bars b are united by a bar, b, in which is a slot, b,which is parallel or about parallel with the tongue.

O is a bracket secured to and projecting laterally from the side of the tongue opposite to the bracket B. The bracket O is formed of bars c c, with series of holes c', through which bolts c pass to secure them to the tongue in such manner as to permit of adjusting the bracket to increase or diminish `the distance of the pulley 0 from the tongue, which pulley is journaled on the outer end ofthe bracket C.

D is a bar bolted to the tongue and to one arm of the bracket B, and has a series of holes, d. The pulleys d d are j ournaled to the bar D and stayed by straps d. The pulleys d d are adjustable lengthwise of the bar D by' means of the holes d in an evident manner.

E is the equalizing-bar forming part of an ordinary four-horse double-tree, except that one of its ends, E, is extended and rests so as Serial No. 220,571. (No model.)

The bolt eturns in the slot b, and permits the Y bar E to swing, as shown by dotted lines at Fig. 2, but at the same time fits snugly to the sides of the slot and prevents endwise movement of said bar E.

The double-trees G G are hinged or journaled to the equaliZing-bar E in an ordinary manner, brieiiy described, as follows: The bar G is hinged atits mid-length to the outer end of the bar E by a bolt, g, and the bar G is hinged to the bar E by a bolt, g, at the mid-length ofthe bar G', and at a pointin the har E same distance from the bolt e as is the bolt g, but toward the opposite end of the bar E from the bolt g. -A block, g, holds the bar G above the bar G. The double-tree G has a singletree, g, at each of its ends, and the doubletree G has a singletree, 9, at each of its ends.

H is the draft-chain or equalizing-chain, which, near its mid-length, passes around the pulley 0'. One end, 71., of the chain H is secured to a clevis, h, which is hinged or journaled on the boltg, and its other end, 7L, is secured to a clevis, h, which is journaled on the bolt g. The end h of the draftchain is preferably passed to one side of the pulley d', by which it is deflected toward the left-hand side of the tongue, and the end 7i is deflected in a similar manner by the pulley d, for purposes hereinafter described. The chain H is of such length as to hold the bolt c at all times free of the forward end of the slot 0; hence the force eXertedbythe draft-animals in drawing the machine acts nearly entirely on the pulley 0', and thus exerts a lateral force or side draft on the tongue in a contrary direction to the side draft of the machine, and which lateral force may be adjusted to equal the side draft of the machine by extending the bracket C, as hereinbefore described.

Vhere the side draft of the machine is very great, the chain H may be deflected by the pul leys dd to increase the force ofthe side draft of myimproveinent in an evidentinanner, and by adjusting the pulleys d d, as herein de scribed, this increased force may he adjusted in quantity as required.

The chain I-I moves freely on the pulley c to permit either end of the bar E to advance or recede as said bar oscillates on itsfulcrum e, and the bolt e is free to move in the slot b any distance forward or rearward required by ordinary eontraetionor extension of the chain H Without the bolt e coming in contact with either end ofthe slot I1. E' of the equalizing bar E, resting on the tongue, acts as a support for the bolt e in sustaining the four-horse double-tree.

It Ywillbe evident that myimprovement may be used in any machine with side draft, and that three-horse ortwo-horse double-trees may be used with my equalizing-bar E, chain H, and side pulley, 07; hence I do not limit my claims to the use of a four-horse double-tree; but

vWhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a draft-equalizer, in combination with a tongue, substantially as described,a bracket, B, projecting from one side ofthe tongue and having a slot, b, in its outer end,an equalizerbar, fulcruined in said slot b, and provided with suitable draft-bars, a bracket located on the opposite side of the tongue from the bracket B and carrying a pul1ey,` c, and a chain, II, passed around the pulley 0 and connected with the equaliZing-bar, for thepurpose specified.

2. In a draft-equalizer, in combination with a tongue, a side bracket with slot b" in its outer end, which is parallel with the tongue, and an equalizing-bar fuicrumed in said slot, whereby it may havea reciprocating movement lengthwise of the tongue, substantially as and for the purpose specified,

6. In a draft-equalizer, in combination with a tongue, a bracket, C, with slot b in its outer end, bar E,and bolt c, carrying suitable draftbars, chain II, bar D, carrying pulleys d d,

and bracket O, carrying pulley c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

` 7. Ina draft-equalizer, in combination with a tongue, a bracket, C, with slot b in its outer end, bar E, and bolt @carrying suitable draftbars, chain H, bar D,carrying adjustable pulleys dd, and bracket O, carrying' pulley c, Substantially as and for the purpose specified.
