PATENTED FEB. 26, 1907.

and useful Improvements in Transportation UNITED STATES TRANSPORTATION DEVICE.
To all witont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHESTER L. TRIPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a carrying device by means of which a barrel containing ashes may be taken up, conveyed in an upright position toan other place, and deposited on the ground in the same position without the hands of the person using the device coming in contact with said barrel; and this object I attain by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 i sa side view of the device. showing in dotted lines the barrel in position to be transported. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the wheel and the front ends of the side bars, showing the detail of the axle and bearings; and Fig. 4 is a side view of the barrel containing ashes, showing one of the apertures in the side thereof.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The letters a a represent two bars, preferably of Wood, and bent as shown in Fig. 2, having their. front ends parallel with and near to the sides of a wheel I), which is journaled between them, and having their rear portions a sutlicient distance apart to embrace an ordinary-sized barrel. The bars a a are held in normal position with reference to each other by the curved brace c, the ends of which are rigidly secured to said bars, as shown in Fig. 2, and also by the bolt h, which constitutes the axle on which the wheel I) turns, as shown in Fig. 3, in which 9 g are eyebolts, (the eyes of which are shown in section,) secured in the front ends of the bars a. The bolt h passes through the eyes of the eyebolts g g, and when secured, as shown, prevents the front ends of the bars a from approaching or receding from each other and serves as an auxiliary with the brace c to hold the bars a in normal position with Specification of Letters Patent.

reference to each other, as above stated. The bars a are further provided with thimbles d, into which the pins 6 are adapted to pass, and extend through apertures min the sides of the barrel is. The pins 6 are preferably secured to the bars a by the chains e The operation of the device is as follows: It being desired to remove a barrel containing ashes, which barrel has previously been provided with apertures in its opposite sides, as at m, the barsAare adjusted over said barrel and one of the pins efirst placed in position and then the other. The outer ends of the bars a are then raised in the same manner as the handles of a wheelbarrow, which action raises the barrel from the ground, when it can be transported to the desired point, deposited on the ground, the pins 6 removed from the thimbles d, and the bars a disengaged from the barrel, all being done Without the hands coming in contact with the barrel. In this operation the barrel is maintained in an upright position, so that its contents is not stirred up and mixed with the surrounding atmosphere.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A carrying device, particularly designed for transporting barrels containing ashes, consisting of the bars a, adapted to embrace a barrel, having their front ends bent toward, and parallel with each other; the curved brace c, rigidly secured to said bars; a wheel, journaled between the parallel ends of said bars, in such a manner that its axle serves as an auxiliary with the brace c, to hold the bars a in normal position with reference to each other; the thimbles d, secured to the bars a; and the pins e, adapted to pass through said thimbles and enter apertures in opposite sides of the barrel to be transported, all as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHESTER L. TRIPP.
