ASSIGNORS TO DAVIS LocoMorrvE, WHEEL MISSOURI, A CORPORATION or DELAWARE.
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, CGMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS,
AND JAMES F. DUNN, or
' CAR-UNDER'FRAME.
Application filed Patented Feb. 26,1907.
To a whom, it may concern: Be it known th t we, CLARENCE H. How- ARD and JAMES DUNN, citizens of the United States, residing, respectivel at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, an at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have jointly invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Underframes, of which the following is a specification,
Our invention relates particularly to the end sills of a car-underframe, and has for its object to provide a stron compact, and durable metallic end sill a apted to form a rigid brace to the underframe for resisting shocks from collision, to dispense with a sep arately-constructed dead-block, and to insure a firm support for the draw-bar of the draftear. D The invention consists in features of novelty as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, whereon- Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved metallic end sill; Fig. 2, a to plan view, and Fig.3 a rear elevation, t ereof; Fig. 4, an end view of the same; and Figs. 5
and 6, vertical transverse sections through the sill on lines 5 Figs. 1 and 2.
Like letters and numerals of reference denote like parts in all the figures. a represents our improved metallic car end sill, which). is preferably composed of cast- 5 and 66, respectively, in
steel integral throughout and is in the present case channel-shaped in cross-section, havmg its web 1 arranged vertically against the ends of the longitudinal car-sills 2 of the under- 1 frame (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2) and its top and bottonrl'langes 3 3 projecting outward and horizontally therefrom.
On' the bearing-face of the Web 1, against the ends ofthe longitifdinal sills 2, are formed, preerably, projecting-pockets 4, into which the ends of the sills 2 are preferably tenoned,
. (or otherwise inserted,) and thereby held immovably in place at the proper distance apart, or the pockets & may be formed by depressions in the said face of the web 1 in llglll of projections therefrom, as found desira e.
On the inside. of the web. 1, preferably midway between the top and bottom flanges 3 3 circumferential an extension 8, having its 'call'y therethrough,
sills 2, is formed a preferably hollow horizontal cylindrical rojection 5, which is united y to the'flanges 3 3 by longitudinal ribs 6, the outer end 5 of theprojection 5v being preferably flush with the outer 6o edge of the top flange 3 or equivalent surface of the end sill a, and the end 5 and opposite partthereto of the web 1 perforated centrally and transversely to theend sill a, for the passage therethrough in sition of the members of the underframe of the screw-threaded end portion of the corresponding truss-rod, (not shown,) which is tightened against the outside of the end 5 by a nut, whereby dinal sills 2, enga ed therewith as described, are rigidly secured together. Furthermore,
similar projections 7 are formed on the inside of the web 1 adjacent to each pocket t'of the middle longitudinal sills forated centrally for the passa 'e therethrough of the screw-threaded end portions of the stay-rods, (notshown,) wh ich connect the transverse members of the car-underframe to the end sil The end sill a is formed on the outside for its entire depth between the top and bottom flan es 3 3, opposite to the web 1 and pockets 4 of the middle longitudinal sills 2, with the web 1 and otherwise suitand united to the flanges 3 3 the end sill c thereat to form a having a bottom or parallel to ably shaped and body of dead-block, the extension 8 horizontalflange which is flush with the bottom of the exten-- sion 8 and projects therewith somewhat below the adjacent bottom surface of the end sill a, so as t9, form a shoulder 10 thereat for engaging a corresponding shoulder on the 95 draft-timber'11, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, the draft-timbers 11 hearing at their end portions against the under side of the flanges 9.
' Through the extension of the end sill a are holes flanges 9 are'holes' 13 for the passage vertirespectively, of the bolts 14 "15, which secure the draw-bar carryirons 16, draft-timbers idly together, all as indicated by dotted lines of the end sill a and adjacent to each pocket 4 of the-outer and intermediate longitudinal 5 5 the assembled porthe end sill a and longitu- 7o 2, and per- Outer face vertical.
9 at each end thereof, 0
8 and adiacent part 12, and through the 11, and end sill a rigr05 ante ml with the body of the end sill a, the
who e forming a simple, strong, rigid; and
' inexpensive brace to the underframe, which 18 thereby enabled to resist shocks from collision without breakage and displacement of its parts,
' We do not limit ourselves to a channelshaped end sill a, as the sill maybe box, T,
' I, or otherwise shaped in cross-section and sion on its front side, and flanges on the ex- 1 adapted to be formed integrally with the pockets 4, perforated prsjcctims (er their;
equivalents) 5 and 7, and extension or dead block 8.
'What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1'. In a car-underframe, a cast-metal end Slll integral throughout and having an extentension adapted to form bearings for the draft-timbers, substantially as described.
2. In a car-underframe, the combination of a metallic end sill, channel-slni'ped in I l l l l l l cross-section, and havingits web adjacent to v said sill, each projection and corresponding part of the web having a perforation therethrough transversely to the saidsill for the truss and stay-rods of the said frame, and an extension uniting the said flanges on the outside of the said sill opposite to the Web and adapted to form a dead-hlocl ,-all the said parts of the end sill being integral therewith, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
