EDWARD A. LARSEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
GAME APPARATUS.
To @ZZ wlw/11, t nur/,7j concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. LARsEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improve d Game Apparatus, of which the following is a iull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in game apparatus, the object being to provide an apparatus of the character having a tarl get, upon the hitting of which by a suitable projectile a rotarj7 part is put in motion and on stopping will display a character indicating a value or score for a marksman, thus not only providing an agreeable pastime, but aiiording the requisite of skill in playing.
I will describe a game apparatus embodying my invention and then point out the novel 'features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the ligures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a game apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on the line :t :c of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, and Fig. 1 is a face view, of a form of indicating-dish that may vbe employed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a front board to the rear side of which is connected a frame 2, and removably attached to the board 1 at the upper end is a disk 3, having a central opening 4, indicating a bullseye, and rearward of the disk is a target 5, made to represent a bird, which is attached to an arm 6, mounted to swing in a verticai plane with a shaft 7, having bearings in brachets 8, attached to the rear side of the board 1. On one end of the shaft 7 is a lever 9, from which a resetting-cord 10 extends to a suitable placeAsuch, tor instance, as to the position occupied by the party playing the game. Carried by the shaft 7 is an arm 11, adapted to engage with the arm 6 when the shaft is rotated to move the target to normal postion.
Mounted to rotate on a shaft 12, having bearings in the iront board 1 and in a crosspiece of the frame 2, is a wheel 13, having at its front side a 'llange 14, on which various indices are placed at suitable intervals. As here shown, the indices 15 consist ot the representation of dice-spots; but it is to be un- Application filed May l2, 1904. Serial No. 207,530.
Patented Feb. 19, 1907.
JI derstood that other characters representing 'values may be employed Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The front board 1 is provided near the lower edge with a sight-opening 16, through i which one of the indices may be disclosed l when the wheel comes to a stop. Secured to the trame 2 is a curved spring-plate 17, to the signed to engage with any one of a series of lugs 19, formed on the periphery of the wheel 13. This spring-plate 17 is inclined downward and laterally and is in the line of movement of the target, so as to be struck thereby when the target falls. The wheel 13 is provided with a series of curved projections 20, engaged by a detent consisting of a roller 21, carried by a curved spring 22, attached, as here shown, to the trame 2. This detent 21 is designed to permit of a practically tree rotary movement oi the wheel, but to hold the same rigidly when stopped.
In connection with the apparatus I may employ an auaible signal which will indicate when a projectile passes through the opening 4'. This audible signal, as here shown, conslsts of a metal strip 23-such, for instance, as steel-to give a ringing noise, and this strip is suspended from an eye 24, attached to the disk 3, and its members extend downward in line with theopening 4 between the disk 3 and the target. When the visual target 5 is to be used, the disk is to be removed, and when the target 5 is struck by a projectile-such, for instance, as a bullet from a rifle er .a hand-ball-the said target will fall and strike the spring 17, setting the same in vibration, and the impact of the spring against the lugs 19 will set the wheel in rotary motion. As the ringer 18 is mounted to sw'.ng on the spring in the direction of its impact movement, it is obvious that successive lugs may pass underneath the same by y swinging it to one side. Then the wheel comes to a stop, the score will be indicated tl'irough the opening 16.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A target mounted. to swing in a vertical plane, a rotary part carrying indices, a curve .i spring arrangei in the Lne of downward movement of said target, and devices on said rotary part adapted to be engaged by said spring for imparting motion to the rotary part.
free end of which is pivoted a finger 18, de-

2. A target comprising a front board having a sight-opening, a rotary part having in dices aapte to be seen through said opening, a target mounted to swing on the board,
a curve spring aaptei to be struck by saioi` target, on swinging downward, and lugs on the rotary part aaapted to be enga-gesl by said spring.
3. A game apparatus comprising a front boarl having a sight-opening, a wheel having rotary connection with the boarfi, said wheel being provide i with a plurality of various indices, a target mountei to swing on the boari, a curvei spring aiaptei to be struck by said target, a 'finger mountei to swing in one direction on the spring, and lugs on the wh eel for engagement with said finger.
4. A game apparatus comprising a rotary part carrying 1n iices, a target mounte to swing from a visible position above said rotary part to an invisible position rearwar of said rotary part, ani means actuatei by saii target for imparting motion to the rotary Dart.
5, A game apparatus comprising a board having an opening, a Wheel mounted to rotate on the board and having indices ariapted to be disclosei through said opening, a detent for the Wheel, a disk mountea on the board and having an opening, a target mountei to swing on the board rearwara of said disk, a curvesi spring afiapted to be struck by said target, a roller carrie by the spring, and lugs on the wheel for engaging with said roller.
6. A device of the character described., comprising a rotary member, a buiis-eye, and mechanism actuated by the buHs-eye for directly imp arting a rotary movement to the said. member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to thfs specification in the presence of subscribingl witnesses.
