JAMES GRIFFIN, OF BORRISOKANE, IRELAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1907.
Application filed July 11,1906. Serial No. 325,580.
T 0 f/,ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES GRIFFIN, residing at Terryglass, Borrisokane, County Tip perary, Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new or improved toy, the object being to provide a car, truck, or the like which during its travel operates and sounds a suitably-arranged bell or bells.
In order that this invention may be fully understood, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an under side plan showing the mechanism for operating the bells. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with one of the running-wheels shown diagrammatieally in dotted lines for clearness, and Fig. 3 is a detail hereinafter referred to.
As shown in the drawings, a car af, mounted on three running-wheels, is employed, and in carrying this invention into practical eilect to one ofthe running-wheels a or to the rcvolving axle thereof I secure a suitable pulley connected, by means of a suitable flexible connection c, -with a second preferably smaller iulley d, carried by a spindle d', mounte in suitable bearings e beneath the body ot' the car or the like. This spindle d has a crank fi'ormed in its length, to which is secured one extremity of a connecting-rod g, the opposite extremity of which is secured to a horizontal sliding piece 7i, carried in guides h ,in such a manner that as the car or the like travels the said sliding piece h is caused to oscillate. This said sliding piece t in turn causes two levers i to oscillate, each of these levers being iulcrumed, as at i', beneath the ear and secured at one extremity to the sliding piece 7L b y means o'l pins j, passing through slots j in the said leversi, or byother suitable means, and carrying at its other extremity a suitable bell lr, and these bells are sounded as the sliding piece z, and consequently the levers fi, oscillate, as hereinbefore described.
It is obvious that any number of bells and levers may be employed within practical limits, and, il desired, an eccentric may replace the cranky", formed in the spindle d.
Ila ving now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is-n In a sounding toy, the combination, with a base provided with ground-wheels, of a guide secured to the said base, a plate slidable in the said guide, driving mechanism for reciprocating the said plate from one of the said ground-wheels when the toy is drawn along, a lever pivoted to the said base and Operativcly connected with the said plate at one end, and a bell secured to the other end of the said lever.
In testimony whereof I alhx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES GRIFFIN.
