G. G. ROHRSSEN. DEVICE FOR HOLDING PACKAGES OP MERCHANDISE.
APPLIOATION FILED AUG.1, 1906.

DEVICE FOR HOLDING PACKAGES OF IVIERCHANDISE..
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Feb. 19, 1907.
Application filed August 1,1906. Serial No. 328,738.
To (all w/tc/w 1 may 00/066770.
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. Ronnssnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Device for fielding Packages of Merchandise, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilieation, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a portion of the rear face of the device. h ig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the construction of the flange at the lower edge of the plate, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to devices for holding articles of merchandise that are displayed for sale; and the object of my invention is to provide a device for the purpose described which can be manufactured cheaply, which presents a neat and ornamental appearance, and which is provided with a removable ad vertising-strip relating to the goods or articles which the device holds.
The device herein shown is adapted to be used principally for holding boxes of crackers; but it is obvious that it could be used for holding other merchandise put up in package form.
Referring to the drawings, which represent the preferred form of my invention,1 designates a plate, preferably of sheet metal, which is provided at its opposite edges with flanges 2. Adjacent the center of the plate 1 are two flanges 3, that extend parallel to the flanges 2, the flanges 3 being formed by portions of the plate 1, which are bent outwardly, the portion at of the plate which extends between the portions that were utilized to form the flanges 3 being severed at its lower end and bent rearwardly to form a leg or support which holds the device in a substantially vertical position. Preferably said leg is provided with a strengthening-rib 5, consisting of a wire or rod that is fastened thereto. The portions of plate 1 which form the flanges 3 are severed at their l i l l upper ends by diagonal cuts, and the triangular-shaped portions 3 lying between 1 above the other between the edge flanges 2 and the central flanges 3, which hold said cartons in position, the lower edge of the plate 1 being provided with a flange 6, which supports the lowermost boxes. Preferably 1 form this lower flange 6 from a separate piece, as shown in fig. 4, and provide it at its rear edge with an interlocking bend 7, that cooperates with a flange or bend 8 of similar shape at the lower edge of the plate 1, the front edge of the piece 6 being folded over to stiffen said piece and prevent it from Lending. The central flanges 3 are spaced apart, as shown in Big. 1, and in this space I place an advertisement, which preferably relates to the packages of merchandise 11l01111t6l in the device, the advertisement being printed on a strip of cardboard 9. In order that the advertising-strip may be replaced by one provided with a different advertisonient, I mount the same in channel-shaped guides 10, which are secured to the base of the central flanges 3, as shown in l ig. 5, and the lower end of the advertising-strip 9 rests in a transversely-extending channel-shaped guide 11 adjacent the bottom flange 6 of the device, as shown in Fig. 1.
Preferably the plate 1 has printed thereon nulrerous phrases relating to the nierchandise which the device holds, so that when the packages of merchandise are removed from the device these phrases will be exposed to view and attract the eye of the purchaser and also lend to the device a neat and ornanental appearance. The upper edge of the plate 1 is curved, as shown in Fig. 1, and in the space above the boxes of merchandise the nanie of the manufacturer of the merchandisc is placed.
A device of this construction can be manufactured cheaply and presents a very neat and ornamental appearance, as the removal of the boxes of merchandise as they are sold exposes to view catchy phrases relating to the merchandise.
Having thus described my invention, What able advertising-strip; substantially as de- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letscribed.
ters Patent, is-
1. A device for the purpose described, comprising a plate, longitudinally-extending central flanges spaced away from each other, flanges at the side edges of the plate cooperating with said central flanges for retaining in position a plurality of superimposed packages, a removable advertising-strip arranged between said central flanges, and a leg or standard for holding the plate in upright position; substantially as described.
2. A device for the purpose described, comprising a plate provided at its side edges with integral flanges, central flanges fornied by bending portions of said plate outwardly, said central and side flanges being adapted to cooperate to retain in position two coluncns of superimposed packages, a leg for holding the plate in upright position, said leg being formed by the portion of the plate between the portions which were utilized for the central flanges, a flange at the lower edge of the plate for supporting the lowermost, packages, and channel-shaped guides connected to the central flanges for receiving a remov- 3. A device for the purpose described, comprising a plate of sheet nietal having a curved upper edge, integral flanges at the side edges of the plate, central flanges forrr. ed integral with the plate and being adapted to cooperate with the side flanges for retaining in position two colunnns of superimposed rectangular-shaped boxes of merchandise, channel-shaped guides connected to said central flanges, an advertising-strip arranged in said guides, a separate piece connected to the lower edge of the plate to form a flange for supporting the lowermost box of each colu rn, a supporting-leg fornied by a portion of the plate, and ireans for strengthening said plate adjacent the point where the leg is connected thereto; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of July, 1906.
GEORGE G. ROHRSSEN.
