This invention relates to that class of rotary cutter-heads for woodworking-machines which are used particularly for cutting dadoes and for cutting grooves across the fiber of the wood. For these purposes circular saws, set at any deviation from a right angle upon the shaft or mandrel, have heretofore usually been employed, the same being known as wabble-saws. Considerable difhculty has been experienced in properly setting or adjusting such saws to obtain the desired results; and one object of the present invention is to provide an improved cutter-head for cutting grooves across the fiber of the wood without resorting to the use of wabble-saws. Cutter-heads of this character are usually employed in connection with saw-benches having short mandrels; and a further object of the invention is to provide an im roved cutter-head which may be convenient y and securely mounted for gperation upon such short shaft or manrel.
A further object of the invention is to construct an expansion cutter-head which may be conveniently, quickly, and expeditiously adjusted for the purpose of cutting grooves of various Widths.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation of the class of cutter-heads to which the' invention belongs.
lVith these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will hereinafter be fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view showing the upper or adjustable section of the improved cutter-head The improved cutter-head is composed of a lower or main section A and an upper adjustable section B. The main section A comprises a sleeve or hub 1, which is provided with diametrically opposite radiallyextending flanges 2 2, each extending around approximately one-fourth the circumference of the hub or sleeve. The latter has a bore 3 of large diameter and is provided at its lower extremity with an internal annular flange 4, bounding the central aperture 5, which is for the admission of the shaft or mandrel 6, upon which the cutter-head is mounted, said shaft or mandrel being provided with an annular shoulder 7, forming a seat for the cutter-head and with a threaded extension 8, which extends through the aperture 5 for the reception of the nut 9, which latter may be tightened against the flange 4 of. the cutter-head by means of a socket-wrench which may be conveniently inserted into the bore of the sleeve or hub of the cutter-head. The latter may, in this manner he very conveniently and securely, as well as expeditiously, mounted in position for operation.
The hub or sleeve of the main section of the cutter-head is exteriorly screw-threaded for the greater portion of its length above the j radial extending flangesQ 2 for the reception of a circular nut 10, which is provided at intervals with recesses 11 to enable said nut to by means of an ordinary span- The adjustable member or section B of the cutter-head comprises a hubsleeve 12, which is, provided at its lower end with diametrically opposite recesses gitudinally cut-away portions 13, corresponding with diametrical flanges 2 2 of the main section A, the hub-sleeve being thus bodily bifurcated and forming a pair of 1 M i may diametrically opposite segmental extensionlugs 14 14, engaging the interspaces between the flanges 2 2 of the main section A, it being understood that the hub 12 of the section B is of internal diameter equal to the external diameter of the hub 1 of the section A, upon which the section B is slidable and adjustable, the hub 12 being connected for rotation with the nut 10, so that by turning said nut the section B will be axially adjusted upon and with relation to the section A. The hub 12 of the section B is provided with radially extending quarter-section flanges 15 15, which are in registry with the extension-lugs 14, and consequently with the interspaces between the flanges 2 2, extending from the hub 1 of the section A. It will be observed that the flanges 15 extend radially from the hub-sleeve and at approximately right angles to the axis of said sleeve,while the socalled extension-lugs 14,which are entirely distinct from said flanges, are, properly speaking, a portion of the sleeve, and may thus Without affecting the thickness or dimensions oi the flanges be made of any desired length, it being evident that by increasing the length or the extension-lugs the scope or range of adjustment of the cutterhead is correspondinglyincreased. It is preferred that the flanges 2 2 and 15 15 be slightly in excess of ninety degrees, so that said flanges will slightly overlap, as will be clearly seen by rererences to lug. 4 of the drawings.
The flanges 2 2 and 15 15 of the members or sections of the cutter-head support the cutter-tools, which consists of saw-knives l6 and circular bits 17, each flange supporting a saw-knife and a bit, and said saw-knives and bits being disposed in alternate order upon the opposing sides or faces of the flanges 2 2 15 15, the saw-knives being in advance of the circular bits. By this arrangement the sawk-nives will cut the square edge of the groove across the fiber of the wood, and thecircular bits or cutters will remove the material between the edges of the groove, thus clearing out the entire width of the groove. It will readily be seen that the width of the groove to be cut may be controlled by the proper adjustment of the section or member B of the cutter-head, which is efl'ected by simply turning the nut 10. By so adjusting the sectim B as to place the circular cutters in line with one another a groove may be cut of a width corresponding with the width of a single circular bit or cutter. By expanding the cutter-head the width of the groove may l l l l l be increased until it approximates the combined width of two of the circular bits, it being necessary for the best results that the circular bits should be slightly overlapped when the device is in operation. Wider cirbe substituted for the comparatively narrow ones shown in the drawings, the capacity of the cutter-head for cutting grooves of various widths being limited only by the length of the extension-lugs 14, which by engaging between the flanges 2 2 of the hub 1 serve to keep the sections A B of the cutter-head interlocked for operation.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection .with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It is not deemed necessary to show in detail how the depth of the groove out may be gaged, this being no part of the present invention. The general construction of the device is simple, the desired adjustments may be easily effected, and the improved device has been found in actual operation to be thoroughly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
I claim 1. In an expansion cutter-head, a main hub having radially-extending tool-carrying flanges, and an adjustable hub-sleeve slid. able upon the main hub having radiallyextending tool-carrying flanges, said hubsleeve being bodily birurcated to form extension-lugs engaging the interspaces between the tool-carrying flanges of the main hub, projecting longitudinally of the head beyond the tool-carrying flanges.
2. In an expansion cutter-head, a main hub having diametrically opposite radiallyextending tool-carrying flanges, an auxiliary hub-sleeve slidable upon the main hub and having a longitudinal bifurcation forming segmental extension-lugs that engage the interspaces between the tool-carrying flanges of the main hub, said auxiliary hub being provided with raoially-extending tool-carrying flanges projecting radially beyond the extensiondugs and registering with the interspaces between the tool-carrying flanges of the main hub, and means for effecting adjustment of the auxiliary hub upon the main hub.
3.
