Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1911, Serial No. 616,967. Renewed June 27, 1916. Serial No. 106,282.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD I-I. WAUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gutter-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to an improved cutter-head primarily designed for supporting companion cutters in wood working machines of the matcher type, and it consists in certain novel features and combinations of parts as set forth in the following description and succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
The invention embraces a novel provision for mounting cutters whereby they are rigidly sustained in operation for more perfect cutting action.
In the accompanying drawing wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 shows in plan a cutterhead, embodying the features of my invention in such form as now preferred by me, equipped with double rabbeting cutters and intermediate tongue forming cutters. Fig. 2 is a diametrical section of the head proper on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the spindle clamping member in broken section, and Figs. 3 and 41 are fragmentary side elevations of the head, viewed from different standpoints, showing a pair of the oppositely inclined cutter holders.
The head proper comprises opposite annular like supports 1 and 2, shown in the form of flange extensions of a hub 3, fitting on a tapering split sleeve 4: applied to a spindle 5 and extending into a cap 6 which latter has screw thread engagement with an adjusting screw 7 opposing the adjacent end surface of the spindle. Screwed on cap 6, is a nut 8 having a peripheral base flange which turns freely in a rabbeted ring 8 screwed with a tight fit into an annular boss of flange 1. By this arrangement the head may be quickly secured to or released from the spindle by manipulating nut 8, on cap 6 to force hub 3 against the tapering surface of sleeve 4 or contrariwise, as the case may be. Cutters .9, of a length to snugly fill the space between, are inserted between flanges 1, 2. These cutters and flanges are provided with registrable holes which receive the cutter holding and clamping bolts 10. Tightening nuts 10 will spring the flanges 1, 2 together enough to securely grip cutters 9. These are double jointing cutters of circular type and their axes are parallel the axis of the head. In the spaces between bolts 10 the flanges are provided with alined holes for the reception of the holders for cutters 12, 12, the axes of these holes being inclined relative to the planes of revolution, the angle for cutters 12 being opposite that for cutters 12, as is shown in Figs. 3 and 1. The hole 2 in flange 2 is non-circular in outline and closely fits the correspondingly shaped head 14: of
bolts 11, 11, and cutters 12, 12 fit against the shoulder formed by the inner end of the head 14. Nuts 16 on the threaded shanks of the bolts 11, 11 secure the cutter in place. The non-circular bolt head fitting the like shaped hole in flange 2, prevents rotation of the cutter holders, that is, the bolts 11, 11. The holes 1 in flange 1, through which pass the shanks of the bolts 11, 11, are not threaded, but are surrounded on the side faces of the flange, with nut seats which are perpendicular to the axes of the bolts. Nuts 15, 15 fix these cutter holding bolts in axially adjusted position. By these means the location of the cutters 12, 12, transversely of the head may be accurately determined.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, 1s
1. In a cutter-head, spaced supports, a cutter, an inclined holder for said cutter extending between and slidably engaged with said supports for adjustment crosswise of the space between the latter and clamping means engaged with said supports for effecting a movement of one thereof toward the other.
2. In a cutter head, spaced supports, each formed with a seat, the seat of one support being olf-set relative to that of the other, a cutter holder engaged in the seats of said supports and means for adjusting said outter holder crosswise of the space between said supports.
3. In a cutter-head, spaced supports each formed with a seat, the seat of one support being offset relatively to that of the other, a cutter holder slidably engaged for move- Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
ment in the direction of its length in the seats of said supports, and means for securing said cutter holder as adjusted.
4. A cutter-head comprising a hub, outwardly projecting relatively spaced supporting means on said hub, cutting meanscomprising a pair of cutters supported by said supporting means and spaced crosswise of the space therebetween, a second cutting means comprising a pair of cutters spaced from said cutting means and inclined in relatively opposite directions relatively to the direction of travel of said hub, and means securing the cutters of said second cutting means to said supporting means for adjustment each toward and from a respective side of a plane intermediate the cutting circles of the cutters of said first named cutting means.
5. A cutter head comprising a hub, spaced supports on said hub formed with seats, a cutter holder slidably engaged in the seats of said supports for adjustment crosswise of the space between the latter, a cutter mounted on said holder between said supports, and means engaged with said cutter holder for holdmg the same against shdlng in the seats of said supports.
6. A cutter head comprising a hub, spaced supports on the hub formed with seats, a cutter holder slidably engaged in the seats of said supports for adjustment crosswise of the space between the latter, said holder having one end portion threaded and its opposite end portion free to slide in the seat of one support and held against rotating therein, a cutter mounted on the holder between the supports, and nuts on the threaded portion of the holder to impinge against the adjacent support for retaining the holder from sliding in the seats of the supports.
