Description

E. W. COOPER, OF WILLIAMSTOWN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LUKENS COOPER, 'OF BLAOKWOODTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 84,412, (lated November 24, 1868.
IMPRovLD GLASS-MOULD.
The Schedule referred to in 'these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, E. W. OooPER, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Glass-Moulds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in moulds for forming glass vessels with screw necks; land My invention consists of a detachable ring, having screw-threads on its inner edge, and being constructed and applied to a mould, substantially as described hereafter, so that when the screw-thread has become worn or broken, the ring may be removed to make way for a new one, the greater portion of the mould, which would otherwise have to be discarded, being thus saved.
order to enable others skilled in the art to make my invention, I will'now proceed to describeits construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l is a vertical section of of Williamstown,
the upper portion of a mould, illustrating my invention, and
Figure 2 is a sectional plan on the line l-2, g. 1.
The mould is, as usual, made of two parts, A and A', hinged, and otherwise held together in the ordinary manner. s
The lines a a indicate that portion of the inside of the mould which determines the shape of part of the sides and curved upper portion ofthe jar to be moulded, and the annular projection b, Awith its internal screwthread, is arranged to form the neck of the j ar, with its external thread for receiving a screw-cap or cover.
Heretofore it has been usual to make this annular projection and the moulds in one piece-a plan involving the abandonment of moulds perfect in every part excepting the projection, which is apt to become worn,
broken, or otherwise damaged sooner than lany other portion ofthe mould.
In order to prevent this waste, I make the extreme top of the mould in the form of a detachable cover-ring, B, which is also in two halves, and the central opening of which receives the molten glass.
This ring serves to confine to its place a detachable ring, D, the inner portion of which forms the desired annular projection b, having an internal screw-thread.
This ring fits snugly in an annular recess in the mould,
if the screw-projection b formed a permanent part of the mould.
I claim as my invention, Letters Patent- In a mould for forming glass vessels with screw-tops, a detachable ring, 1) having screw-threads on its i-nner edge, and being L pplied to the mould, substantially in the manner described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this' specification, in the presence of two Asubscribing witnesses.
E. W. COOPER.
and desire to secure by Witnesses M. M. RICKEY, TIMOTHY READ.
