IMPROVEMENT IN G-AUG-ES FOR MORTISING- WINDOW-SIAS-H.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same;
.ence marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a number of movable stops or bolts inabar,
to be placed on a common mortising-machine, for the` purpose of cutting the mortises in a sash.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to' the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view,
Figure 2, a plan-view, and
Figure 3 is a sectional side view of one of the bolts' or stops.
-A represents a bar, made of suitable material and dimensions, which is cut with a groove from its upper side, leaving asolid piece in the centre, as well as at each end, as shown in iig. 2.
In this groove is inserted a series of blocks, B B, each of which is providegLwith a stop 'or bolt, C, passing through the same, and extending a suitable distance.
The blocks B B are grooved so as to permit the stops C O to be pressed down level with the upper side of the blocks and the bar A, and a spiral spring, a, is placed around each stop, C, in each of the blocks, holding said bolt np-when not so pressed upon.
The blocks B B can be moved, and secured at any point desired in the groove on the bar A, by means of screw-bolts b b, 'passing through slots in the 4sides of the bar A, and through ahole in said blocks, the bolts being then fastened by screws d d, as shown in iig. 1.
The operation of my device is as follows:
The bar A, which should befrom eight to ten feet in length, is screwed fast or otherwise secured to 4the rest of any common mortising-machine, with its centre just under the chisel.
Tenon the sash first, and then set the stops as far apart as the size of the glass, placing the shoulder of the sash-stile against the stops. I
. If twelve-inch glass is wanted, the two inside stops are set just twelve inches from the centre, each way; then the mortise, which is generally half an inch, is cut by merely revolving the chisel; then the next stop is set twelve inches from the first one, making two feet` from the centre, under the chisel; then run the shoulder of the style against the stop, and bring the chisel down to ma'rk it; then, if the mortise is wanted one and a half inch long, set the outsideA stop, just one and a half inch from the other one, which will give the size of the mortise.
When using the outer stops, the intermediate ones are pressed down into the blocks.
By thus bearing the. sash against the stops in suc cession, each and every mortise in the sash may be cut without being laid off, thus saving both time and labor.
vAfter the gauge has been set for any certain size sash, any person can work the same without the possibility of a mistake.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A The combination of the adjustable blocks B B, stops or bars O C, and slotted or grooved bar A, all arranged as described, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony `that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 11th day of July, 1868. W. P. BOYD. Witnesses:
GEO. W.'F1ELDING JOHN BROWN.
