Description

eine
B. F. BARNES, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 84,405, dated Nove/mbe?` 24, 1868.
naPRovnMENT'IN ora-cans.
' o-nre- M The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all persons to whom these wesents shall come Be it known that I,'B. F. BARNES, of the city of Boston, in the-county of Suolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Oil-Cans; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings, to be hereinafter referred to, forms a full and complete specication of the same.
By the present invention, the nose or nozzle to an oil-can is so constructedlin two parts or sections that, in combination with a wire or other stem placed within the oil-passage of the nozzle, such oil-passage can be readily cleared and freed of dirt or any other obstruction which by any possibility may become lodged there.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, my improvements in oil-cans are illustrated- Figure l being a central vertical section through an oil-can, with its nose constructed according to my invention.
' Figure 2, a horizontal section, takeninthe plane of .l
the line :c x, iig. l.
A, in the drawings, represents' the body7 of an oi1 can, having an opening at B to receive the nozzle or nose G.
This nose C is made in two parts or sections, D and E, that are connected or joined together by a screwthread at F, and when so joined, the one formsa continuation of the other in a taper form, coming to a small head at G, where the oil is discharged from the.
of the nose C, and thus to retain them from passing down over the body of the can.
. J, a wire or stem hung at one end, by its eye, K, to the cross-bar L, upon the inside of the part or section D, near its end, where screwed into the mouth ofthe body A.
This wire is extended up from the bar I, to and into the taper portion ofthe nose, a sufficient distance as to afford no obstruction to the passage of the oil through the nose, when the can is used. With this wire thus permanently aiiixed to the n'ose, by unscrewing the taper section E of the nose, and forcing it` through the other section D, the oil-passage through the taper section can and will be cleared entirely from dirt, Sac., if any should have there accumulated, pushing it out at its open end, G, as is obvious.
The advantages of my improvements in oil-cans are obviously many, among which may be mentioned that with the wire or stem-cleaner, the nose can be always cleaned with dispatch, and with no trouble or annoyalice, the action of the stem beingpositive, sure, and effectual, and without danger of breakage within the passage.
Having thus described my improvements, I shall state my claim as follows :l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to .have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
The nose C, made in two parts or sections, D and E, in combination with the wire J, secured at one end in section D, and extending by its other therefrom into the oil-passage, through part E, substantially as and for the .purpose speciiied.
B. F. BARNES.
