Description
UNITED STATES- FATENT oFFIcE.
DANIEL BUNNEL, OF XENIA, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR FACING STONE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 843, dated July 16,V 1838.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL BUNNEL, of Xenia, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Facing Stone, called the Stone Facing Machine, and do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact de scription, to wit:
VFigure 1 an uprightshaft fifteen inches diameter and 8 'feet long more or less, figure 2 transverse beam and posts, ligure 3l arms 3 inches by 6 sixteen feet long more or less inserted in the lower end of upright shaft 1 a short distance from the ground, gure 4 braces fastened to upright shaft 1 and extending outward and downward and fastened to arms 3 ten feet from the shaft 1, figure 5 short braces inserted between the arms 3 about l feet from upright shaft l, figure 6 a circular hoop fifteen inches broad more or less to prevent the horses from stepping on the platform of stone, figure 7 edges of the bed or platform of stone as placed ready for the operation of facing, figure 8 guide posts for bridles when propelled by horse power, figure 9 swingle trees for horses, figure 10 stones used for rubbers, figure 11 short braces inserted in the end of the arms to prevent the stones used for rub bers from slipping 0H the bed of stone, figure 12 the stone in which the gudgeon of upright shaft turns, ligure 13 gudgeon of up-` right shaft, Fig. 2, open space around the lower end of upright shaft, letter A stones placed ready for beingfaced by the operation of the machine. i
The above vdescribed machine may be propelled by horse power, water, or steam, the one represented in the accompanying drawing (to which a reference must be had) is propelled by horse power. The manner of using said machine is as follows: A bed of stone is laid on the ground edge to edge around the lower end of upright shaft covering the space over which the arms iigure 3 extend in such a manner that theyrr should pass just over it, large stones are then placed on the bed of stone, and when the machine is set in operation, the arms marked 3 in the drawing sweep the stones placed on the top around on the bed of stone and with the requisite supply of sand and water will reduce the bed of stone beneath to a uniform face while the st ones'usedfor rubbers are themselves faced by the operation.
The manner of supplying the machine with water is this: 2 bands are placed on the braces marked 5 from which a slow stream issues as they pass around over the bed of stone and sand is thrown on with a shovel as needed. Coarse sand is usedat first. When a smoother face is required the sand used is sifted, and when a fine polish is required no sand is used, only water, and a smoother face is produced by the stones rubbing each other without any intervening substance between them.
What Iclaim as my invention is-.
The manner of constructing a facing wheel divided by arms and braces into separate compartments for holding and carry* Y DANIEL BUNNEL.
