Be it known that I, JosEPn A. MoCLURE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashing-Maehines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to washingmachines, has especial reference to that class known as rocker-machines, has for its object means for applying pressure to the rocker and the articles operated upon, and the invention consists in certain improvements in construction, which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section on line 3 3, Fig. 2 and Fig. at a perspective of the operating-levers and the means for applying pressure to the rocker detached.

Reference being had to the drawings and the designating characters thereon, the numeral 1 indicates the body portion of the machine, which is rectangular in form and comprises ends 2, sides 3, bottom 4, grated sup plemental bottom 5, rocker 6, cover 7, and legs 8, all of which may be of any approved form of construction. The rocker 6 is provided with vertical arms 9, having vertical slots 10 in the upper ends thereof, and when in use the rocker rests upon the clothes to be washed, and the upper ends of the arms 9 extend through longitudinal slots 11 in the cover 7 to admit of longitudinal vibration of the arms as the rocker is operated.

12 12 indicate the levers for operating the rocker, in which are lateral slots 13 for engaging a stud or pin 14 in each of the sides 3, which stud forms a fulcrum for the levers, and the stroke of the levers is limited by blocks 15, over which are secured horizontal cleats 16, which prevent lateral displacement of the levers, and the levers are secured to the studs 14 by slidable latches 17, having an elongated opening 18 therein which engages a screw 19, by which they are attached to the levers, and in the lower end of each latch is a vertical slot 20, which engages a headed I l j l the bar are nuts 2 1- for clamping the levers on the bar. Each lever is provided with a longitudinal slot or opening 25 to receive a vertically-zuljustable bar 26, which also engages the slots 10 in the arms 9, projecting from the rocker 6, and said bar 26 is secured in the slots 25 by nuts 27 and washers 28.

The bars 22 and 26 are provided with screw-threaded couplings 29 and 30, and in the coupling 30 is a vertical rod 31, secured therein and extending loosely through the vertical opening in the coupling 29 to allow it to move freely therein. The red 31 is provided with a nut 31, is screw-threaded at 32, and is provided with an adjustable nut 33 and a helically-coiled spring 34, which rests upon the nut 33, with a washer 35 interposed between them, and the upper end of the spring bears against the coupling 29, with a washer 36 interposed between the spring and the coupling.

As the nut 33 is adjusted upward tension on the spring 3% is increased, and a corresponding increase of pressure is exerted upon the bar 26 and the rocker 6.

The spring 34: and. the nut 33 as arranged produce a yielding pressure upon the rocker and hold it down in engagement with the clothes being washed, while the water by the motion of the rocker is forced through the clothes at each end of the body 1 alternately. The degree of pressure applied may be varied to suit conditions by the adjustment of the nut 33.

37 indicates a yoke which engages the bar 2 of the lovers 12 1.2 to afford means for two persons operating the lovers and is provided with transverse rods It is obvious that the machine may be opcrated by power by attaching it to a suitable motor, if desired.

The pressure-producing device is wholly out of contact with the water in the machine, is simple in construction, and easily manipulated to produce any degree of pressure desired within the range of l'liG spring.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A washing-machine provided with a ICC rocker, operating-levers having elongated openings therein, a pressure-producing device supported on said levers and comprising one member fixed on the levers and a member movable in the levers, and connections between said movable member and the rocker.

2. A washing-machine provided with a rocker, vertical arms extending therefrom, operating-levers having elongated openings therein, a fixed bar connecting the levers, a movable bar in said openings in the levers and engaging said vertical arms, and an adjustable spring between said bars.

3 A washing-machine provided with a rocker, vertical arms extending therefrom, operating-levers having elongated openings therein, a fixed transverse bar, a movable 3 bar in said openings and engaging said vertical arms, a vertical rod connected to the movable bar, a spring supported on said rod and engaging the fixed bar, and a nut adjustable on the rod for regulating the tension of said spring.
