Description
E.VANCE.
Cooking Stove. No. 8,432. Patented Oct. 14,1851;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. VANCE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,432, dated October 14, 1851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELISI-IA VANCE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton co-unty,'Ohio, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Double-Oven Cooking Stoves; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making part of these specifications, in which drawings Figure 1 represents in isometrical perspect-ive a View of the stove with the top plate so broken out as to expose to view the parts involved in my invention, and Fig. 2, represents the hearth plate with the fire bed and back, (or front and top parts of-the terminus of the flues,) the same being capable of division into one or more pieces if desired. Figs. 3 and t are vertical, longitudinal sections showing the terminus of the flues and with arrows indicating the draft as modified by the dampers.
The nature of my invention consists in making the terminus of the flues at the back of the fire place in stoves and also in constructing the vertical flue between the back and front ovens of a double oven stove so that it can be made an ascending or descending flue at pleasure and furthermore so arranging the foregoing features that they combine in a very simple and efficient manner to form a double oven stove presenting no unusual difficulties to the molder, involving no extra weight and affording con trol over the heating of the ovens, an incidental advantage being that I have all of the oven room gained by extending the oven under the hearth without the defect existent there with viz, want of heat at the front of the front oven, at the same time attaining more boiler room. This I effect as fol.- lows:
(a) is the back oven to which I give the greatest height the stove will admit.
(b) is the front oven extending as far as the front plate (a) of the fire place. The flue in the front of the front oven passes up to and under the hearth plate, and back to the space occupied by the terminus of the flues, as shown in Figs. 8 and 4; this place is designated by the flanges ((Z) and (6) Fig. 1, or their equivalents, and by their portions (f) and (g) of the hearth plate Fig. 2 and by the flue plate (h) Fig. 1, and is also defined in Figs. 3 and 4.
This arrangement throws the fire place forward and of course gives the stove corresponding oven room and boiler room while I at the same time economically and usefully occupy a space which is usually thrown away in cold or hot air chambers.
The vertical flue between the ovens is caused to be either an ascending or a descending flue by means of a damper playing athwartthe stove and having leaves at right angles to one another, the damper being as to both its leaves of that kind. known to the stove trade as a register damper and having the openings in the plate to correspond to the openings in the plate (it) so arranged that when these openings are adjusted to one another the act of so adjusting them causes the other leaf of the damper to close the openings in the bottom plate of the boiler flue; this bottom plate continued also forming the top of the back oven.
The front plate of the back oven and the back plate of the front oven may be made in connection with the side plates of the stove and the parts aforementioned to constitute this flue which is an ascending flue when the openings in top plate (h) are unclosed as seen by the arrows in Fig. 3, and a descending one when the opening in the bottom plate of the boiler flue are unclosed as seen by the arrows in Fig. 4.
Thus simple flues of the entire breadth of the stove are made to encircle the ovens and discharge their contents into the stack or smoke pipe by means of the openings Having thus fully, clearly and exactly described the nature, construction and operation of my invention and improvements in stoves, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is Making as described a space between the fire place and the back oven the terminus of all the flues; and causing the vertical flue between the ovens to be an ascending or descending flue by means of the register damper as described; and I furthermore claim the combination of the first with the second feature for the purpose and in the manner described.
