Be it known that I, CHARLES C. ALLEN, a citizen of tle United States, residing at West Seneca, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Display-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to display-boxes, and, among oth er tlings, provides safety packing, locking, and sliipping attachments.

It consists of a display box or case provided with an aperture or apertures for labels or a transparency-such as glass or celluloid, or both-means for protecting such. labels or transparency, and means for locking the cover in the closed position and supporting the cover in the open position.

Referring to the drawings herewith, which form a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a Jront elevation of a box provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on tle line A B, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the cover-hinge. Fig. 4is a detail section of the cover-supporting device. Fig. 5 is a erspective of the cover-supporting l4 asp. ig. 6 is a perspective of the latch. 5 is the back, and 6 the cover, of the box, hinged to the back 5 at 7.

Sis a glass or other transparency for exhibiting the contents of the box, and 9 is the backing for a label or other display-surface to be inserted in the area 2. This backing 9 is bulged or buckled centrally, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, to hold such label up to the opening 2. To the side walls 4 4 are soldered cleats 10, and parallel with the front and soldered to the side walls 4 4 is a bent-up reinorcing-piece 11. Between the front 1 and cleats 1() and the reinforcing-piece 11 is inserted a backing-plate 12, which is `dished inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2,and which has its lower edge bent outwardly and downwardly, as shown at 13, Fig. 2, to engage over and hold the transparency 8 upon its upper edge. Cleats 14, secured to the side walls 4 4, hold the ends of the transparency 8, andl the lower edge of the transparency 8 rests to the slots 23 and 24 that when the arm 29 is down upon the bottom 15 of the box. It 55 will be seen that by this arrangement the label in tl e area 2 is lirmly clamped up against the front of the box and that by sllding out the lbacking-plate 12 the label-backing 9 may be removed and also the label and the glass 8.

Referring now to my means for protecting the front of the box, l inged inside the front iange 16 of tie cover 6 1s aprotecting-cover 17. Tle relative sizes of the top and the front are such ti at the protecting-cover 17, being capable 'of folding back within the cover 6, will when in place over the front cover and protect tle areas 2 and 3.' The protectingfcover 17 is pivotally connected to or loose-tinged to the interior of the front edge of the top 6, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Wire loops or pivots 18, secured to the ange edge 16 or formed from the reinforcing-Wire 19 of the cover 6, are formed substantially in the sh ape shown clearly in Fig. 3. The protecting front 17 takes over these pivots or loops and is thus given sufficient play to fold back witliin the cover or to be drawn out to cover the lfront 1 of the box.

I will new describe the means for latching the protecting-cover 17 down over the`front 1.

Secured to the bottom 15 is a transverse L- strip 21. This strip is dished or curved inwardly centrally of its length, as shown in Fig. 8, and has its upper edge folded inwardly. The lower edge of the protecting-cover is folded over a reinforcing-wire 22, as clearly shown in Fig. 8. Vhen the protectingcover 17 is brought to place over the front 1, its lower edge is engaged by the L-strip 21. so that it is held frictionally from slipping out from behind the strip 21. To further secure the protecting-cover in place, I make a slot 23 in the strip 21 and a corresponding slot 24 in the protecting-front 17. (See Fig. 8.) These slots register whenk t-he rotectingcover 17 is down in place over t e front 1. Into these slots I insert the latching or locking device 25, (see Fig. 6,) which consists of a loop 26, the body part 27 for passing within the slots 23 and 24 ,and a short arm 28 and a longer arm 29, lying in a common axis. The lengths of these arms are such with reference IOO inserted within the slots the shorter arm 28 may be slipped in, so that the two arms 28 and 29 will take the position (when given aquarter-turn) shown in Figs. 2 and 8. Secured to the inside of the box-back 5 is a hasp 31, (see Figs. 4 and 5,) which has a slot 32. v When the cover 6 is raised and the protecting-front folded back within it, the

ower edge of said protecting-cover will slip down (owing to the free play of the hinges 1S) and engage against the outside of the back 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The latch is then slipped into the slot 32 of the hasp 31 and the strain of the chain uponthe protecting cover 17 will prevent the top 6 from falling over back and straining the hinges 7.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In combination with a display-box,

A means for protecting,` the front thereof comprising a protecting-front hinged or pivoted adjacent to the front edge of the cover of said box, and capable of covering the display-apertures of said box, and also capable of being olded Within or parallel with the cover of said ox.

2. In combination with a display box, means for protecting the front thereof comprising a protecting-front hinged or pivoted adjacent to the front edge of the cover of said box and capable of covering the display-apertures of said box and a latch for holding said protecting-front in such closed position and said protecting-front also being capable of folding within and parallel with the cover of said box.

3. In a display-box, in combination with the box-body andv hinged cover, a protectingfront capable of foldin within said cover and capable of covering te front of said box, hinges connecting said protecting-front with said cover comprising-loops secured to said cover and taking through said protectingfront and so arranged within the front flange said front to assume either of its two positions.

In a-display-box in'combination with \the box-body and hinged cover, a protectingfront hinged to said cover and 'capable of foldingwithin said cover and capable of covering the front of said box and a latch for securing said protecting-front in place over the box-front comprising a dished or bent L-strip secured to the lower edge of thev box-front and capable of engaging over the lower edge of the protecting-front to hold the same frictionally and means for further locking said protecting-front comprising a latch 25 and slots 23 and 24 therefor.

6. In a display-box in combination with the box-'body and hinged cover, a protectingfront hinged to said cover and capable of folding within said cover and capable of covering the front of said box and a latch for securing said protecting-front in place over the boxfront comprising a latch 25 .and slots 23 and 24 therefor, and means for supporting the box-cover in the open position comprising a chain 30,securing said latch 25 to said cover 17 and a hasp 31 secured to the box-body and having a slot 32 to receive said latch.V
