Be it known that I, ALBERT J. H. KUHsIEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Corner-Shields and Casters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates 'generally to improvements in ball-casters for trunks, wardrobes, cabinets, and the like, and the present invention has reference more especially to a novel construction of combined corner-shield and casters for trunks and the like.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a combined corner-shield and caster for the purposes above mentioned which will be of simple and durable construction and, furthermore, may be easily secured upon the trunk, wardrobe, cabinet, or the like without the necessity of cutting away any portion thereof to fit the same in place or when used with the bottom slats of trunks obviating the cutting or boring of a hole in each end of the slat for the roller of the trunk-caster to roll therein, as is now ordinarily the case.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a combined corner-shield and caster for trunks provided with a receiving socket or pocket adapted to hold the ball of the caster and a bearing-plate adapted to be secured in operative relation 'with the main 7 body of the device in such a manner that the shield may be secured upon the edge or cornor of the trunk, wardrobe, cabinet, or the like by means of the usual nails or rivets without countersinking or otherwise cutting away any portion of the trunk, wardrobe, cabinet, or the like or of the bottom slat to which the device is secured.

Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly mentioned will be clearly evident from the following detailed description of my present invention.

The invention consists, primarily, in the combined corner-shield and ball-caster hereinafter set forth, and, furthermore, this invention cons1sts 1n the various arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the corner portion of a trunk provided with the combined shield and ball-caster embodying the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional representation of the parts shown in said Fig. 1, said section being taken longitudinally through the center of the device. Fig. 3 is a face view of the com bined shield and ball-caster removed from the trunk, and Fig. 4 is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 6 is a top view of the corner-shield with the ball-caster and its bearing-plate removed therefrom.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 .indicates a portion of a trunk provided with the usual reinforcing trunk or bottom slats 2.

Secured to the corner of the trunk 1 by means of the usual trunk nails or rivets 3 is the novel form of combined shield and ballcaster embodying the principles of the present invention and the same comprises an angle-plate 4' of any desired shape or configuration, said angleplate 4 being preferably provided with a stiffening rib or projection 5 and a hollow ball-receiving socket or depression 6, the same being formed with a suitable hole or opening 7. The said angleplate 4 is further provided with suitably-disposed holes or perforations 8, adapted to permit the passage of the shanks of the trunk nails or rivets 3, by means of which the shield is secured to the trunk or other suitable body.

A suitable ball 9 of slightly larger diam eter than the hole or opening 7 of the receiving socket or depression 6 is adapted to rest (and at the same time being capable of rotation) Within said socket, said ball having a portion projecting through said hole or opening, so as to be adapted to be brought inholes or perforations 11, which coincide with some of the holes or perforations 8 of the angle-plate 4 in order that the nails or rivets 3, which secure the angle-plate 4 to the trunk 1, may also retain the bearing-plate 10 in its operative relation with the angle-plate and caster-ball. To further secure the said bear.- ing-plate 10 in its operative relation with said angle-plate and ball and to retain the parts in their assembled relation before the corner-shield is secured in its operative position over the corner of the trunk, or the like there is provided a tongue or lug 12, which is struck out of the said angle-plate and turned or bent over the edge 13 of the bearing-plate 10. The bearing-plate 10 has a pressed-out or an annular boss 14, which is made with a concave face or portion to provide a hearing or seat 15 for the upper portion of the casterball 9.

It will be clearly evident from the above description and from an inspection of the accompanying drawings that the combined shield and ball-caster hereinabove described affords a simple and durable construction. Furthermore, the construction is of such a character that the upwardly-extending arm or member of the angle-plate 4 and the top or upper surface of the bearingplate 10, resting directly upon the lower surface of the trunk-slat 2, provide a strong construction and one in which the bottom slat is not weakened at its ends on account of the cutting out or boring of the usual holes in the trunk-slats, as heretofore, to countersink any portion of the corner-shield or of its roller, as it is necessary to do with the devices of this type in use at the present time.

I claim 1. In a combined corner-shield and caster for trunks and the like, the combination, with an angle-plate, comprising two rightangled members, of a bearing-plate secured upon one of said members of said angle-plate and forming with the same a ball-receiving socket, a ball in said socket, said bearingplate having its upper face unbroken and lying in a plane at right angles to the plane of said other member of the angle-plate so as to be adapted to be secured upon the bottom of a slat without cutting into said slat.

2. In a combined corner-shield and caster for trunks and the like, the combination, with an angle-plate comprising two right-angled members, one of which is provided with a ball-receiving socket, of a caster-ball mounted in said socket, a bearing-plate, and means for securing said bearing-plate upon said socketed member of the angle-plate, sub-. stantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a combined corner-shield and caster for trunks and the like, the combination, with an angle-plate comprising two right-angled members, one of which is provided with a ball-receiving socket, of a caster-ball mounted in said socket, a bearingplate, and a tongue connected with said socketed member, said tongue extending over an edge of the said bearing-plate for securing said angle-plate in position.

4. The herein-described combined cornershield and caster for trunks and the like comprising two right-angled members, one of said members having a downwardly-extending portion formed with an opening, all arranged to provide a ball-receiving socket, a bearing-plate arranged above said socket, an annularly-formed ball-seat upon said plate, a ball having a portion resting upon said seat and said ball having another portion projecting from the opening of said ball-receiving socket, means for securing said plate upon said member of the shield, all arranged that the device can be secured to the bottom of a slat without cutting into said slat, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. The herein-described combined cornershield and caster for trunks and the like comprising two right-angled members, one of said members having a downwardly-extending portion formed with an opening, all arranged to provide a ball-receiving socket, a bearing-plate arranged above said socket, an annularly-formed ball-seat upon said plate, a ball having a portion resting upon said seat and said ball having another portion projecting from the opening of said ball-receiving socket, a clamping-tongue for securing said plate upon said member of the shield, all arranged that the device can be secured to the bottom of a slat without cutting into the slat, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. The herein-described combined cornershield and caster for trunks and the like comprising two right-angled members, one of said members having a downwardly-extending portion formed with an opening, all arranged to provide a ball-receiving socket, a bearing-plate arranged above said socket, an annularly-formed ball-seat upon said plate, a ball having a portion resting upon said seat and said ball having another portion projecting from the opening of said ball-receiving socket, a clamping-tongue for securing said plate upon said member of the shield, all arranged that the device can be secured to the bottom of a slat without cutting into the slat, both of said members of the shield being provided with nail or rivet receiving perforations, and the said bearing-plate being also provided with nail or rivet receiving perforations corresponding to and registering with the nail or rivet receiving perforations of the 1 member which is provided with the ball-rei ceiving socket, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. The herein-described combined cornershield and caster for trunks and the like comprising a pair of right-angled inembers, one of said members being formed with a doWnwardly-extending annular portion 6 which surrounds a hole in said member, said annular portion 6 providing a ball receiving socket, a plate 10 formed with an annular boss 14 extending partially into said ball-reeeiving' socket, a concave ball-seat 15 on said E plate, said seat being surrounded by said ani nular boss, all arranged so that there Will be no projecting portions extending above the upper face of said plate, and a clampingtongue forced out of one of the members of the shield, said tongue extending over the edge of said plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
