ROCKER STOVE-GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS B. WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caldwell, in the county of Summer and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocker Stove-Grates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stoves, and particularly to the grates thereof, and has for its object the provision of stove-grates in combination with improved means for actuating said grate in such manner as to dump the contents of the fire-box of the stove into the ash-pit of said stove.
A further object of said invention is the provision of a stove having a plurality of rocking grates and means for locking said grates in a closed position.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a stove. constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the grates in their closed position. Fig. 2 is a like view of said stove, showing the grates in the position they assume when they are actuated to dump the contents of the fire-box of the stove into the ash-pit. Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating a slot formed in the shelf of the stove. Fig. 4 is a plan view of said shelf, illustrating a locking device hereinafter described. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the members comprising the grate. Fig. 6 is a side elevatlon of said member, and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a combined handle and stove lifter hereinafter described.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the fire-box of a stove and the numeral 6 the ash-pit of said stove. Journaled in bars 7, carried by the side walls of the stove, are pivot-bars 8, which carry the grate-bars 9. Depending from the lower portion of the grate-bars 9 are arms 10, to which a link 11 is connected, said link engaging transversely-disposed pins 12, carried by the arms 10. Linch pins 13 prevent the disengagement of link 11 from said pins;
' The outer end of the link passes through a slot 14, formed in the front wall 15 of the stove and is provided with a pin 16, which engages the walls of a slot 17, formed in a lever 18; This lever 18 is pivoted at 19 in a bracket 20, carried by the front wall of the stove. A slot 21 is formed in the shelf 22 of the stove and comprises a comparatively narrow portion 23 and a wide portion 2 1. The upper end of the lever 18 travels in this slot and is provlded with a detent-spring 25, which is adapted to engage behind a shoulder 26 of the shelf 22, to thereby lock the grates in their closed position.
A handle 27 is provided with a socket 28, adapted to fit upon a reduced portion 29 of lever 18, to thereby provide means for actuating said lever. A nose 30, carried by the handle 27, serves as alid-lifter, when desired.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, spring 25 engages behind the shoulder 26 and serves to lock the grates in their closed positions. When it is desired to dump the contents of the fire-box of the stove, handle 27 is fitted upon the reduced portion 29 of lever 18, and said lever 18 is Having described my invention, what I claim is In a device of the character described, the combination with a stove, of a plurality of grate members mounted for rocking movement in said stove, a link having pivotal connection with all of said grate members, a lever pivoted for swinging movement upon the exterior of the stove and having operative connection with said link, a shelf provided upon the front of the stove, said shelf being formed with a shouldered slot for the reception of said lever and a spring-detent mounted upon said lever and designed to engage the shouldered portion of said slot.
