UNI ED STATES CHRISTOPHER MATTICE, OF DELHI, NEW YORK.
P TENT OFFICE.
STOVE:
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 287,?65, dated October 30, 188 3,
Application filed August 22,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER 'MArTIon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delhi, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to improvements in stoves, and more particularly to the grates thereof, and the object of the invention is to improve the construction and to economize fuel; and to that end the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention. I
Figurel is a longitudinal section of a stove with my improved grate applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan viewof the stove on the line a: x. Figs. 3 and 4 are details of the grate:
has a bearing in the side H, and extends outwardly, terminating in an angular shank, h, to receive the ordinary wrench or shaker for operating the grate.
I is a pawl provided with a slot, 2', which slips over the stud K on the side H, which retains it in place against the side, but at the same time allows the pawl to swing around on said stud. The free end of the pawl I is provided with a jaw, 70, which engages with the shank h, to hold the grate in position when thestove is in use, and by placing a Wrench on the shank h andraising the pawl the grate may be shaken or dumped at will.
L is a pin passing through a hole in the front 0, and extending inward to form a rest or support for the grate. The pawl I being released from the shank h, the pin L may be drawn out and the coals dumped in the ashpan 1).
M is a removable partition in the center of the fire-box,being held in place by the guides m m. This partition is provided with a draft regulator, m, and on the opposite side of the partition Mis a grate, E, having its rear bar,
6, provided with a journal, 6, having a bear-.
ing in the bracket F, and its outer end has a bearing in the side H, and extends outwardly, terminating in an angular shank, h, to receive the shakingwrench. The object of the draft-regulator m", which is located in the space formed between the upper end of the partition M'and the lower side of the stovetop, is to regulate the size of that opening,
whereby communication between the respective fire-boxes may be enlarged, or virtually closed, as seen in Fig. 1. Thus it will be observed that when the fuel is burning only in one fire-box a portion of the heat arising therefrom may be allowed to escape into the opposite fire-box, and thence over that pordesirable in summer weather; or fire, may be made in both sections and used by separate parties for their individual cooking.
This case is confined to the novel features of the fire-box. Other matter incidentally shown forms the subject of another application, Serial No. 96,159.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. The combination, with the double grates E E, of the partition M, having draft-regulator m, as set forth. 7
2. The combination, with the removable partition M, guides on m, and grates E E, having shanks h h, of the pawls I, having jaws k, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER MATTIOE.
