To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES T. FoRBEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Gun-Cleaner, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has to do more particularly with a novel form of handle for attachment to the outer or rear end of the cleaner-rod; and the object had in view is to provide a new and improved handle adapted to permit free turning or rotation of the cleaner-rod and the fixedly-attached swab at its inner end with the handle held against turning action.

The invention consists of the special construction. arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in preferred form by the accompanying drawings, the novelty being generically and specifically set forth in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing my improved gun-cleaner ready for use; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged central longitudinal sectional view taken through the handle, the same being illustrated applied to a fragmentary portion of the cleaner-rod.

My improved handle is specially designed for application at the outer end of the rod of gun-cleaners and other similarly-used devices, and is characterized in being constructed adapted to permit free rotation of the device with the handle held against rotation.

In carrying out the generic comprehension of my invention I provide a rotatable handle A at the outer end of a cleaner-rod B, having a swab or other device 0 at its inner end.

In the construction of my improved handle I employ a hub D, which may consist of an integral' part of the rod B, but preferably is provided with a screw-threaded socket E at one end adapted for the reception of a screw-threaded end F of the rod B. The socket end of the hub D is constructed with an encircling flange'or enlargement G, and its other end provided with screw-thread H. The screw-threaded end of the hub is cut away, leaving a fiat surface for the purpose appearing further on.

I denotes a sleeve or shell having an inner bore J, slightly larger than the hub D, permitting its free turning thereon. One end K of the sleeve-bore J is internally enlarged to receive the flange or head G at one end of the hub D and also leave a pocket L, adapted to hold a series of rollers or balls M. The other end N of the sleeve I is likewise internally enlarged, providing a pocket 0, adapted to contain a series of rollers or balls P, which, with the rollers or balls M at the other endot' the sleeve, provides same with free revoluble support on the hub D.

Q denotes a collar having screw-threaded adjustment on the screw-threaded end H of the hub D. R denotes a non-rotatable washer arranged between the collar Q and a securing-nut S, whereby the collar is held as adjusted. The opening through the washer It is not screw-threaded and is constructed adapted to be freely slid on the screwthreaded end H of the hub D. A portion of the opening through the washer is made flat, adapted to fit against the aforesaid flat surface at the screw-threaded end of the hub when the washer is arranged thereon. By such construction it is apparent that the washer will be held against rotation and at the same time be permitted free sliding movement when adjusting the collar Q and the securing-nut S. The latter-described end of the handle is provided with a removable cap T, having screw-threaded attachment to the enlarged adjacent end of the sleeve I, as shown. The cap T is suitably slotted at U, whereby to facilitate its removal, and the collar Q may have notches V, with which a suitable device may be engaged in adjusting it for proper confinement of the balls M P in their pockets L O. i

The construction of my improved guncleaner will be understood from the above description.

Now it is ap arent that in the use of my invention for c caning a gun or during other similar use thereof the rod and swab is free to revolve as the rod is worked lengthwise, and it is obvious that when cleaning a gun having a rifled or grooved bore the swab will engage and follow the spiral wind of the rifling or grooving of the gun-bore, and the rod and swab being free to turn obviously the rotation thereby imparted to the swab upon working the cleaner as understood, that the gun-bore, and more particularly the grooving or rifling therein, will be efi'ectively cleaned to an improved degree, not possible with an ordinary form of gunclcaner.

The chief underlying novelty of my invention is the provision of a handle forming an adjunct of a gun-cleaner constructed adapted to permit l'ree rotation of the cleaner-rod and the swab at its inner end.

The combination With a rotatable rod, of a handle comprising a hub located at one end of said rod, a circular enlargement on the hub, at its end adjacent to the rod, a sleeve ada ted to fit loosely on the hub, an inner poc 61 at the rod end of the sleeve, balls held in said pocket by the enlargement at the rod end of the hub, screw-thread and a flattened portion at the other end, of the hub, an inner pocket at the upper or adjacent end of the sleeve, balls in the latter-stated pocket, a screw threaded collar, a non rotatable Washer, and a securing-nut, whereby to hold tpe hub and balls in place, and a cap 011 the s eeve.
