COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 1907.
Application filed July 16, 1906. Serial No- 326,306-
.Z'o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK FONTNEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmgs.
My invention relates to combs, and has for its objects a comb which shall not be capable of accidental displacement or removal from the hair and which is. adapted to facile operation.
To these ends, essentially, my invention consists in the novel construction and combinatlon of parts hereinafter described, and
illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the inner or concave side of an ordinary'comb embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section of the same on line a: so of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a rear view of the fastening device removed from the comb and in closed position; Fig. 4, a like view of the same in open position; Fig. 5, a section on line 1 g of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the yoke-plate.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
-A represents an ordinary back-comb head, and B its teeth.
C is a retaining-plate provided with lateral lugs a, having openings 6, through which pass screws or rivets 0, whereby the plate is fixed to the comb-back A. Other fastening means may be employed, if desired. The plate C projects somewhat from the plane of the side of the comb and forms a housing for the fastening mechanism. Its lower portion, however, is open to allow free action of the retaining-arms, and its lowermargin coincides with the line of the bases of the teeth. The housing has also an opening (1 in its top to permit the passage of a plunger 6, projecting above the housing and having a reduced shank portion f, which traverses an opening g in a yoke-plate h, which is provided rivetingprongs 1', adapted to engage the yoke h to the rear face of the plate or housing C. A com-' pression-spring 7c surrounds the shank f, and
its ends bear against the yoke h and the shoulder Z of the plunger formed by its reduced portion.
Two oppositely-disposed hooked jaws m are pivoted by a pinn to the lower extremity of the plunger-shankf and have longitudinal Slots 0 in their upper limbs, through which loosely pass the two lower prongs i.
The operation of the described parts is as follows: During the insertion of the comb into the hair the plunger e is manually pressed downward against the pressure of spring is, and this movement in conjunction with the prongs 'i opens the jaws m and allows the hair to enter the comb-teeth up to the base of the back or head A. The plunger is then released and the points of the jaws come together and overlap each other under the hair strands.
What I claim is 1. In acomb the combination with the head and teeth, of a housing-plate fixed to the head, jaws within and extending below the plate, and retractile means for closing the aws.
2. In a comb, the combination with the head and teeth, of a housing-plate fixed to the head, a plunger mounted in the housing and having one end projecting therefrom, a pair of jaws normally in closed position pivoted to the other end of the plunger, and spring means for normally retaining the jaws in closed position.
3. In a comb, the combination with the head and teeth, of a housing-plate fixed to the head, a yoke-plate fixed to the housingplate, a plunger slidably mounted in the housing-plate and yoke and having one end projecting above the housing, a shoulder on the yoke, jaws pivoted to the lower end of the plunger, and provided with slotted upper portions, rivet-pins upon the yoke-plate passing-through the slotted upper portions of the jaws, and a spring upon the plunger bearing against said shoulder and the yoke-plate.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK FONTNEAU. Witnesses:
