To all whomz't mayconcern Be it known that I, HrnniAnn-(i. BATTLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chardon, in the'county of Geauga', State of Ohio, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in GOmbs; and I do-hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skille'd in the art towhich it appertains tomake and use'the same.
This'invention relatesto side combs more particularly to inconspicuous. means for pre venting accidental withdrawal of the side combs.
An object of thepresent' invention is to provide a? side comb in which the outermost teeth will have pivotally mounted tip ends which may be manually rocked and held extending transversely across the points of the next intermediate teeth so that closed hair receivingcompartments are formedbetweenthe outer and next intermediate teeth of the comb, which serve to prevent accidental removal of the comb from the hair.
A further object of the invention is to provide a comb in which the pivoted tips of the outer teeth will be rockable across the spaces between the outer and next intermediate teeth by a novel toggle mechanism, and further the outer teeth will be equipped with means for preventing the toggle mechanism from moving the pivoted tip ends outwardly beyond alinement with their respective shanks so that the comb will be at all times in operative position for insertion in the hair.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended tion of my improved comb showing the piv-- oted outer toothed ends in released position. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the comb with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a fragmentary detail view showing the locking catch.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate'similar parts, the-comb is: shownto comprise a slightly curved back 10, from oneiedge of which project a' series of? teethll the outermost teeth 12 being of considerably greater length than the intermediate teeth of" the series. The tip end 13 of each outer tooth is formed separate from the-shank 1 1 of the tooth, connection between thepartsbeing made by an end 15 of'thetip end being'reduced and insertedin a slot 16 formed in the: tooth shank, a pivot pin'l7- being passed through the shank and reduced portion of the tip-end" to pivotallysecure the partstogether. The inner wall-of the tooth shank slot is beveled, as shown at 18*, and theinner .slot and preventing the tip end from being Irocked outwardly out of alinement with-the tooth shank.
The tip end is rocked inwardly and across the point of the next i11- termediate tooth of the series by hereinafter described toggle mechanism, and when in this position a closed compartment is formed between the outer and next intermediate tooth of the series as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The hair is imprisoned in this compartment when the comb is inserted in the hair, and prevents accidental withdrawal of the comb.
Arranged on the back 10 is a toggle lever comprising links 20 pivotally connected together at their inner ends through the instrumentality of a pivot pin 21, and pivotally secured to the back through the instrumentality of pivot pins 22. Secured to the outer end of each link of the toggle lever is one end of a link 23, the opposite end of this link being pivotally connected through the instrumentality of a pivot pin 24 to the intermediate portion of the pivotal tip ends.
In operation suppose the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 2, the comb may be inserted in the hair in the ordinary manner, the pivoted inner ends of the toggle lever links may be manually moved in the direction of the comb teeth, this movement of the toggle lever links operating through the instrumentality of the connecting links 23 to rock the pivoted tip ends of both of the outer teeth of the comb transversely across the ends of the next intermediate teeth of the series and form the hair imprisoning compartments above described. To remove the comb from the hair the above operation is reversed.
For locking the toggle lever in operative position, an angular resilient wire catch is secured to the back, at one end, and the opposite end yielding as the pivoted inner ends of the toggle lever links 20 advance thereover, and when the toggle lever links have reached their final position, as shown in Fig. 1, the spring catch will return to its initial position and present an abrupt outwardly projecting leg portion which engages with and positively prevents return of the toggle lever links to released position until manual depression of the yielding catch takes place.
What is claimed, is
1. A comb including a back, a series of teeth on said back, the outer teeth having pivoted tip ends rockable toward the intermediate teeth of the series, and a toggle lever on said back operatively connected to said tip ends and adapted to move said tip ends into or out of alinement with their related shanks.
2. A comb including a back, a series of teeth on said back, the outer teeth being of greater length than the next intermediate teeth of the series, said outer teeth having pivoted tip ends rockable transversely across said intermediate teeth, whereby closed hair receiving compartments are formed between said outer and said intermediate teeth, and a toggle lever on said back operatively connected to said tip ends and adapted to move said tip ends into or inwardly out of alinement with their related shanks.
3. A comb including a back, a series of teeth on said back, the outer teeth having pivoted tip ends rockable transversely and toward the next intermediate teeth and forming hair receiving compartments be- HILLIABD C. BATTLES.
