IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF PAPER BELTING.

This invention consists of a new and 4improved method of :manufacturing a' fabric of paper, for paper belting and various other purposes, for which this Y manufactured article is peculiarly adapted.
In forming my paper fabric, the pulp is carried through the first presrollers by means of a felt, and
the fabric that is so formed, I carry over other rollers,
' -varied in number according to the requirements of the case, bringingthe irst-foru1ed end back to the first press-rollers, where it is run through again, and'performs the same journey over the rollers as before, carrying with it, however, the continued stock as the felt delivers it, and so doubles the fabric each time that it completes the circuit. This operation is continued until the fabric has the required number of thicknesses,`when the supply of pulp may be cut off, and the rollers allowed to run on with the endless belt of fabric,4 hardening it to the utmost, if such a quality of fabric be desired, or to Whatever degree required.

A much stronger fabric may be made by running a fibrous material, such as thread, Warp, 'or cloth in vith the thicknesses of belt as they are revolved around the rollers. This fibre is worked in with the pulp as it is carried between the press-rolls. Oil may be applied in the same manner, if desired.
- The advantages of this process are that I obtain a fabric that is nearly as adaptable as leather for every purpose, and fully equal to it in niost cases where the latter is in general use, while my fabric is manufactured and can be supplied at half the price of leather. In drying the belt of fabric in process of formation,
it is not necessary that the same be taken ohc the rollers for the purpose, as the same may be surrounded by hot air during its formation; and in taking the belt off from the rollers, after it is formed, it may be either cut or unshipped whole, by taking out the rollers, they being arranged so that this can be done conveniently.
