REMOVABLE-BLA E- SCREW-DRIVER.
To tZl who ntit inlay concern,-
l3e it known that I, SELDEN G; NORTH, a citizen of'the taingIinprovements I in Removable-Blade Screw-Drivers, specification;- I
The objectof m screw-driver pr ctmovable blade or size can be rea invention is to provides or similar tool with a repoint, s'o-thata blade of one dily removed, and another size substituted for it, .or in discarded and another blade substituted for 'll)! This object I attain in the followmgmannn'refeience being had to the accoma panying drawings, in which:-
l a section on the line 5 i the blade.
Figure 1 is a view of a screw-driver illustratingmy invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the lower portion of-the screw-driver. Fig; 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 2'. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 5,, Fig. 3. a Fig. 6 is a sectional view similar to Fig, i without the blade 'Fig'sfl and 8 are detached views of '9 is a view showing mv in vention fapphe Fig. 1( 'is ,a Lview of armodification .ofmy in-q It is desirable in making escrow-driver to provides nnmber of blades which can he at-' tached to the shank of the screwdriver, these blades being of different widths; so as to a'chcuratel y fit the grooves 'of'diiIerent-sized screws; Further, itis' desirable-to have a screw-driver in which the blades or points can be ,renewe'di A great objection to the average removable-point screw-driver; at present on the in rketis the'fact that it is of the screw-driver. By my invention however, therelifre only two parts, the blade and the shank, the hiadc being held in the shank by friet QQ, as fully described hereinafter;
A is thL shank of the screw-driver havingai handle B, and I may form amagazine b, in thenend oil-the handle; as shown by dotted lines, to hold the series of blades belonging to the screw-driver.
The screw-driver may be of the ratchet type or may be a plain screw-driver without departing from my invention.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 8,,1906. Serial No. 296,109,
"nited States, residingin Phil'adelp'hia, Pennsylvania, have invented cerof which the following is 'a 4 4, Fig. 3.. Fig. Sis
Patented Jan. 22, 1907. l
D istlie detachable blade or point, made as clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 8; The end of the shankA is slotted at a, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, and-slotted at a a at each side, leaving a central web M, which extends nearl to the end of the shank A. The blade, D is orked, as shown, forming two prongs d d, which are sha ed to fit the slots a in the shank A, the b0 y portion 01 of the blade fitblade is shaped to fit the groove in the head ofthe screw. The slots a a are of such a width that the "blade will neatly fit therein.
I In order to retain the blade in position, I bend the forks d d of the blade, as clearly in-the metal so that when the forks of the blade are forced into the slots ofthe screw driver they will straightenout and there will be sufiicient friction'to-prevent the accidental displacement of the blade, so that in ordinary attached to the shank, but the blade can be readily withdrawn by& lengthwise pull.
It will be seen also By this arrangement l am enabled to make a screw-driver blade which can be read- BirBd- I a In Fig. 9 I have shown abit A having a portion which is adapted to fit a brace and 1 slotted to'receive the detachable'bl'ade D! cumbersome, and a clamp 01'' chuck mustbe i :ovided for securing the blade to the shank In,Fi'g. 10 I have shown a modification of of the screw-driverA are out at an angle one 'in respect to the other and a flat blade used, so that when the Mad c is forced into theslots their respective slots and be bent out of line, the forks being suflicient to hold the blades in proper position a s that I make a very strong shank, as I extend, the web a? to a point near the end of the shank, thus rigidl connecting the twosides of the shank whic are separated by the'forks of the blade.
,tin the transverse slot at. The end (P of the shown in-Fig. 8, so that one will be out of line with the other, and there is sufricient spring work the blade vfill remain firmly ilydejtached from the shank of the screw-- driver and which when in position will be no cumbersome tained in the magazine in the handle, if (19- my' invention in which the slots intthe shank I in the shank the forked portions will follow It will be understood that while Ihave described my invention in connection with a screw-driver it may be used in connection with a chisel. or a carving tool, and,in fact,in connection with any tool in which it is desired to fit a detachable blade to a shank or body portion. l
I claim 1. The combination'in a tool, of a shank rooved at each side leaving a central web, a
flat blade forked at the inner end, the forked portions of the blade being out of line with the grooves in the shank so that the bladewhen forcedinto the shank will be held to the shank by friction, substantially as described.
. 2. The combination in a tool, of a shank grooved at each side leaving a central web, a
detachable blade forked at the inner end, the v forked portions being bent one out of line with the other so that the blade will b.e held to the shank by friction, substantially as de scribed.
' 3. The combination in a tool, of a shank having a transverse slot at the end and grooved at each side leaving a centralweb uniting the two portions of the shank, a blade having forks at one end, said forked portions adapted to the grooves in the sides of the shank, the body portion of the blade being adapted to they transverse slot in the end of the shank, the twoforks being bent one out of'line with the othensubstantially asdescribed. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
