I To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY O. JAcKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Norfolk, State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Receiver for Coin-Controlled Vending-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The coin and'coupon receiver in the present instance is composed of the bottom plate or disk, which forms the base 53 thereof, and the outer and inner walls 10 and 11, the separate coin and coupon receiving chambers 13, each of which is formed between said-outer and inner walls and the partitions 12 and is adapted to hold a sin le coin'and coupon, so that when one of the c l lambers 13 is filled it is impossible for a coin or coupon to enter through the coin-slot 1 4 in the cover 8. This lock 17 is maintained in its closed position by means of a spring 58, which is secured at one end to the cover 8 by rivets, bolts, or equivalent devices 59, the free end of said spring extending under. the lock 17, so as to cause the depending end 18 thereof to positively enga e the sides of a vacant or blank chamber in t e coin and coupon receiver in order that when the depending portion 18 engages the vacant or blank chamber in the coin and coupon receiver said receiver will be locked in position and cannot be rotated until said depending portion 18 on the lock carried by the cover is disengaged from the vacant or blank chamber therein. The lock 17 is in alinement with the coin-slot 14in the cover8, and the dependthe lock hinged thereto which ing end 18 thereof passes through said slot and engages the sides of the first chamber in which a coin and coupon will be deposited, and thus determines the starting-point of the coin and coupon receiver 4.

- The rim or outer wall 10 of the receiver has thereon the gear-teeth 28, which are adapted to mesh with the teeth of the pinion 29, mounted on the shaft 30, journaled in the boss or extension-31 of the base 1 and also in a bracket 32, which is secured to a suitable support 33 by means of a bolt or equivalent device 34.

The operation is as follows: The coin and coupon receiver being empty, the cover 8 is placed in position, the thumb-nut 22 screwed in place, and the sealing device 24 adjusted, so that it is now im ossible to remove the cover 8 without brea ing the seal 24. The cover 8 is placed in such a osition that the lug 15 thereon will be on t- 11% proper side of the lug 16, which is secured to the rim 11 of the coin and coupon receiver 4, so that said receiver will be permitted to rotate only in the direction of the arrow a. (Seen in Fig. 1.) The receiver 4 isprevented from rotating in either direction until placed in the machine by means of the spring-lock 17, which look is permanently hinged to the cover 8 and extends through the coin-slot 1.4 so as to engage the sides of the first chamber in which a coin and coupon will be. deposited. The ma azine is now placed in the machine in sue a position that the coin-slot 14 in the cover 8 is directly under the removable coin and coupon chute 27. The lock 17 is now swun back and the removable coin and coupon c ute 27 inserted in the coin-slot 14 of the cover 8, said chute 27 also registering with the coin-chute 60, it being understood that the cover 8 is stationary. It will now be understood that the receiver is free to rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow 0 in Fig. 1 when it receives an impulse from the gear 29, and the s ring-pawl 25 on the cover 8 will prevent t e rotation of'the receiver 4 in the opposite direction. When an oscillating motion is imparted by any suitable means to theshaft 41, moving the lever 40 from the position seen in Fig. 3 to the position indicated at 56 and back to its initial position on the return stroke, the lever 40 by means of the pawl 39 and the spring 42 rotates the ratchet-wheel 38] The ratchet-Wheel 38 communicates its motion to the receiver 4 through the gears 36 and 35. the shaft 30, and gear 29.

The amount of rotation'given to the ratchetwheel 38 is so regulated that the coin and coupon slot 14 in the cover 8 will now be directly over the next 'vacant or empty chamber 13' in the receiver 4. It will be understood that during the forward motion of the lever 40 the operator has caused a coin and coupon to enter one of the chambers 13 of the coin and coupon receiver 4 and that it is the return stroke of the lever 40 that moves the next vacant chamber of the receiver 4 in position. This operation is repeated until the blank chamber in the receiver 4 is under the coin and coupon slot 14. At this time the lug 15 will engagev the lug 16, and thus prevent any further rotation in the direction indicated by'the arrow in Fig. 1, it being app ent that rotation'in the o posite directlon is prevented b T means of t e s ringawl 25. When the last emptyor b ank c amber in the receiver'4 arrives in the position to receive a coin and coupon from the chute 27, the pin 43 on the rim of or outer wall 11 of the receiver'4 engages the lever 45, depressing it into the position seen in full lines in Fig. 4, thereby actuating the plate 49 and closing the coin-slot 52 in the .machine, so that the intendingpurchaser is prevented in a positive manner from depositing a coin in the machine when the magazine is filled. The manner in which the slide or plate 49 operates or coacts with the slot 52 will be evident to those skilled in the ant when considered'in connection with the patent to Flora. above referred to, and, Fig. 3, which is a diagrammatic view so far as per tains to the coin-chute and the slot-closing slide. It will be evident that it will be impossible for any one to chan e the coins and coupons in'the receiver 4 wit out first breaking the seal 24 and removing the thumb-nut 22, by means of which the cover 8 is secured in place. It will thus be apparent that the coin which hasbeen deposited by the-purchaser will be brought into a separate chamber, together with the coupon, so that the ticket and the coin which has been deposited therefor may be ositively identified.

It will be un erstood by those skilled in the art that my novel construction of annular rotatable coin and. coupon receiver is adapted to be used in the base of a machine constructed in accordance with the Flora-patent aforesaid, said annular receiver being located in the lowest portion of the'machine and being adapted to be substituted in lieu of the com and coupon receiver I seen in the Flora patent. I have purposely refrained from reproducing in full the drawings of the Flora machine aforesaid, since the construction and manner of operation and application of 1. 4. In a device ofthe character described, a base, a chambered coin and coupon receiver mounted thereon, standards rising from said base, a cover for said receiver carried by said standards and having a slot beneath which the chambers of said receiver are successively brought, means for sealing said cover with respect to said receiver, and means for rotating said receiver.

5. In a device of the character described, a chambered com and coupon receiver, a cover stationary with respect tnereto and having a slot beneath which the chambers of said receiverare successively brought, a sealing device for preventing the removal of said cover, .means for preventing the improper rotation of said receiver, and means for intermittently rotating saidcoin and coupon receiver.

6. In a device of the character described, a chambered coin and coupon receiver, a cover stationary with respect thereto, a sealing de- .vice for preventing improper removal of said cover, a slot in said cover, and means for in- :termittentlyrotating said receiver to bring --one of the chambers thereof into register with-the slot in said cover.

7. In a device of the character described, a chambered coin and coupon receiver, a cover stationary with respect thereto, a sealing device for preventing improper removal of said cover, a slot in said cover, a chute for said receiving chute discharging into said slot,

means carried by said cover for preventing the mproper rotation of said receiver, means for intermittently rotating said receiver, and

' means adapted to be actuated by said receiver to close the coin-slot cf the machine when said receiver is full.

9. In adevice of the character described, a chambered coin and coupon receiver, a cover stationary with respect thereto, a sealin device for preventing improper removal 0 said cover, a coin and coupon slot in said cover, a chute registering with said slot, means carried by said cover to engagc said receiver and prevent improper rotation of the same, a lever, and means intermediate said lever and said receiver for intermittently rotating the latterto-bring the different chambers therein into register with said slot.

10. In a device of the character described, a base, a coin and coupon receiver rotatably mounted on said base and having a plurality of chambers, standards rising from said base, a cover for said rotatable receiver carried by said standards, means carried by said cover and engagin the sides'of said chambers for preventing t e improper rotation of said recciver, a sealing device for preventing improper removal of said cover from said receiver, a coin and coupon slot in said cover, a chute registering with said slot, a lock hinged to said cover in proximity to the slot thereon, means actuated by said receiver for closing said slot, and means for intermittently rotating said receiver to bring a chamber thereof into re ister with said slot.

11. n a device of the character described, a base, a coin. and coupon receiver rotatably mounted on said base and having a plurality of chambers, standards rising from said base,

a cover for said receiver carried by ,said' standards, means carried by said cover and engaging the sides of said chambers for preventing improper'rotation of said receiver, a sealing device for preventing the improper removal of said cover from said receiver, a coin and coupon slot in said cover, a chute registering with said slot, a lock hinged to said cover in proximity to the slot thereon, means actuated by said receiver for closing said slot, means for intermittently rotating said receiver to bring a chamber into register with said slot in said cover, and means for preventing rotation of said receiver when the chambers therein have been filled.

12. In a device of the character described, abed, a receiver having chambers therein rotatably mounted on said bed, means for actuating said receiver, means for locking said receiver so as to prevent improper rotation thereof, a stationary cover for said receiver,

said cover having a slot therein beneath whichsaid chambers are successively brought, and means for locking and sealing said cover with respect to said receiver.

13. In a device of the character described, a rotatable chambered receiver havin gearteeth thereon, a pinion meshing wit said teeth, means for actuating said pinion, a post carried within said receiver, a threaded stem on said post, a nut on said stem, an opening through said nut and stem, a sealing-device for said nut and stem, a stationary cover for said receiver having a slot therein in radial a stop for said receiver and a locking device for preventing improper rotation thereof.

14. In a device of the character described, a chambered coin and coupon receiver, a cover therefor, a sealing device for revent ing access to said receiver, and lociii vices intermediate said cover and receiver, the latter being adapted to be-rotated when in assembled rotatable.
