u GEORGE H. HAYDEN, O'F NEW MARKET, ALABAMA.
A Lene/rs Patent Nee/1,186, dated November 17,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SADDLES.
4 The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pali: of the same.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HAYDEN, of New Market, in the county of Madison, and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saddles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a illl, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in saddles, the object of which is to provide them withl certain conveniences, and also to make them more comfortable to the rider.
It consists inproviding the pommel with a tobaccopipe, and a case for carrying matches, a looking-glass, and other articles; also, in providing the cantle with j an adjustable back-piece, which maybe elevated, to
suppolt the back ofthe rider, when desired.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional eleva- -tion of a saddle havingmy improvements;
Figure 2 represents a plan view of the pommel, showing the case open; and
Figure 3 represents a rear elevation, showing the. adjustable back-support.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
I propose to provide the 'pommel of a saddle with a tobacco-pipe, for the convenience ofthe rider, of which* A represents the bowl, which may be' constructed of any suitable material, and let into the pommel, as shown.
B represents the stem, which may project far enough from the surface of the pommel to serve as a catch for the hasp of the cover C, and also for the application of a rubber tube, connecting with the mouth-piece for the pipe.Y
face of the cover, which will be in a convenient position for use when the cover is raised up, as represented in iig. 2.
rEhe hasp of the cover may be perforated above the bowl of the pipe, as atH, for the admission of air to support the combustion of the tobacco.
I represents a curved and adjustable back-piece, se`
cured to the cantle in a manner to be raised up, as represented iu red in fig. 3, when required to give greater support to the back of the rider, or it may be lowered to the position shown in black when not required.
The ends of the said support, I, are provided with brackets K, arranged to slide on the rods L, secured to the saddle; and
M represents jointed braces, connected at one end with the saddle, and at the other to the support l, and arranged to wo'rk under the guides N.
When the support I is to be raised up, the jointed braces assume a straight position, and thereby are enabled to maintain the support in its elevated position; and when it is to be lowered down, the braces will be doubled down, as represented in black lines.
Any other suitable arrangement may be made for adjusting and supporting the part I.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A saddle, provided with a tobacco-pipe, A, and a case, C, having a looking-glass secured therein, and otherwise arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. rlhe combination, with the cantle of a saddle, of l an adjustable back-piece, I, substantially as and for the purpose desciibed.
3. The back-piece I, provided with the lugs K, arranged to slide on the rods L, and with the jointed braces M, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
