T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. CRAMER, of Aspen, in the county of Pitkin and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide. a lubricator of the drop-feed type which may be used in either a vertical or horizontal position and in each instance have the charging-opening at the highest and the oilfeed opening at the lowest point; and further objects are to maintain a regular feed under varying pressures, toavoid the use of connecting means liable to be easily broken, to avoid any outflow of the lubricant in charging other than through the chargingopening, and to provide improved means for controlling the charging of the reservoir and of regulating the iiow therefrom.
The. invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved lubricator. Fig. 2 isa similar view with the reservoir horizontally disposed, a slight modification being shown. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of the outlet-valve. Fig. 5 is the inletvalve. 6 is a face view of the outer end of the valve-stem and the surrounding plug.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the reservoir, which may be of any preferred form of construction, preferably rectangular, and equipped at its center in wall 2 with an exteriorly-threaded b oss 3, which is. designed to be screwed into the wall of the chamber or cylinder of an engine or other machine or into any pipe or pipe connection leading thereto. Tn the top or outer wall of the reservoir is an opening which is normally closed by a plug 4, extending through which is the end of a valvecontrolling rod 5. This rod is formed with an annular flange 6, which abuts against the inner shouldered end ofthe screweplug, and near its other end has a second annular flange 7, against which bears a coil-spring S, which serves to hold the valve 9 tight against the end wall of the boss. This valve is preferably in the form of a disk from which a central lug 10 is struck up, such lug being engaged by the recessed end of rod 5, and. said disk is curved at its ends and formed with straight sides 12, either of which may be caused to coincide with the outlet-opening 13, the discharge therethrough being regulated by the extent to which the valve is turned axially, allowing for a greater or lesser uncovering of opening 13. The valve-disk is guided by a curved rib 14, the ends of which do not abut against the wall of the boss, thereby providing for the outlet of all the lubricant within the reservoir. On the outer end of valve-rod 5 is an indicator 15, which by means of a scale 16 will show the extent to which the outlet-opening is exposed. The valve may be turned `in either direction.
Opening diagonally into the reservoir at what 1s always the highest point, whether the device be vertically or horizontally disposed, is an inlet or charging branch 17, into which is screwed a plug 18, having a central chamber 19, the outer end of which is normally closed by a valve 20, and when unseated in charging by the engagement of the spout of the supply-can the lubricant will enter the reservoir through ports 21'at the inner end of the charging branch.
According to the construction shown in Fig. 1 the valve is of cone shape, exteriorly ribbed, and has at its inner end a flange or piston-like head 22, which is normally held against a shoulder of plug 18 by a coiled spring 23, said flange having peripheral slots or openings to allow of the passage of the lubricant into chamber 19 and thence through ports 21 to the reservoir. From iiange 22 extends a guide-rod 24, having a longitudinal bore or channel 25 leading at its lower end from transverse ports which open into an annular groove 26 near the inner end of the rod, said bore or channel opening at its upper end into chamber 19 below the valve. The guidercd 24 'fits snug in an opening in the wall of the reservoir concentric with the charging branch, the ports 21 being parallel with and to the side of such opening.
It will be noted that the charging-opening is approximately diagonally opposite the outlet-opening, the former being at the highest and the latter at the lowest point.

into the opening which accommodates guiderod 24, the annular groove 26 of which is normally coincident with such air-duct, allowing By this means I am enabled to secure an equalization of pressure within the reservoir, such pressure being the same as that which exists at the outlet-opening 13, thereby providing for a free and uniform outflow of the lubricant. When, however', the valve is unseated, as in charging, the inward movement of rod 24 closes the inner end of air-duct 27, thereby preventing any of the lubricant during the charging of the reservoir from passing through this duct, all of the lubricant being i required to enter the reservoir through the ports 2l.
In Fig. l I have shown the lubricator as vertically disposed, while in Fig. 2 it is positioned horizontally butin each instance the charging-opening is at the highest point and the outlet-opening at the lowest, thereby allowing of complete filling of the reservoir, the equalization of pressure, and the outflow of all the lubricant. While I prefer the eXteriorly-ribbed cone-shape valve, allowing,.as it does, for the quick and easy unseating by the spout of the charging-can, yet in some instances I may make the valve separate from its piston-like portion.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a ball-valve 28, which is normally held against the chargingopening 29 in the eXtreme end of the plug. The outer face of the piston-like flange 30 is beveled inwardly toward its center, so as to insure the proper seating of the valve once the spout of the charging-can is withdrawn. In all other respects the construction and operation are the same as hereinbefore described.
In practice the reservoir is itself screwed directly into the wall of a chamber or cylinder of an engine or other machine or into a pipe leading thereto, thus avoiding the use of other connecting means. Primarily the lubricator is designed for use in connection with pneumatic tools, engines, &c., wherein there is always a pressure greater than that of the atmosphere. By means of the air-duct I am enabled to maintain in the reservoir at the highest point thereof a pressure equal to that at the outlet-opening.
I claim as my invention- 1. Alubricator comprising a reservoir capable of being positioned at different angles and having a charging-opening at its highest point and an outlet-opening at its lowest point and means for equalizing pressure at both points.
2. Alubricator comprising areservoir capable of being positioned vertically or hori- Zontally and having a charging-opening at its highest point and an outlet-opening at its lowest point, and means for equalizing pressure at both points.
3. A lubricator comprising areservoir capable of being positioned at different angles and having an outlet-opening in one wall, a valve controlling such outlet, andv a fluidduct leading from the outlet end of the reservoir and opening into the latter at the opposite end thereof.
4. A lubricator comprising a reservoir having a charging-opening andv also an outletopening, a valve controlling such outlet, a Huid-duct leading from the outlet end of the reservoir and opening into the latter at the opposite end thereof, and/ means normally closing the charging-opening, such means when unseated closing said Huid-duct.
5. A lubricator comprising a reservoir having an outlet-opening in one wall, a valve controlling such outlet, a charging branch, a huidduct leading from the outlet end of the reservoir and opening into the latter at or near said charging branch, and means normally closing the latter comprising a spring-held device which when the reservoir is being charged closes said iiuid-duct.
A lubricator comprising a reservoir having an outlet-opening at one end, a charging branch, a Huid-duct leading from the outlet end of the reservoir and opening into the latter at the other end thereof, and means for closing such charging branch comprising a spring-held piston a portion whereof effects the closing of said duct when the reservoir is being charged.
7. A lubricator comprising a reservoir having an outlet-opening at one end, a charging branch having a port leading into said reservoir, a fluid-duct leading from near such outlet-opening and opening into the reservoir at the other end thereof, a spring-pressed piston located in said branch and having a fluid passage-way normally coincident with said duct, and a valve for closing the inlet end of said charging branch, the rod of said piston closing the Huid-duct when the valve is unseated.
