To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, HORACE P. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sales Books, of which the following is a specification.

lVhere separate account-books are kept in a business-house with the different individuals or customers, racks or receptacles are generally used in which the books are kept, so as to be convenient of access. To accomplish this, a portion of the book, preferably the front end or the bottom of the cover immediately adjacent thereto, is provided with the name of the individual, whereby the book can be readily picked out from among its fellows.

One object of my invention is to provide suchbooks with a suitable and convenient means for receiving such names, either by printing or otherwise.

Another object is to expose the forward ends of the leaves, so as to be readily accessible to the user for opening them for any purpose, as for inserting a sheet of carbon-paper between them or tearing them off.

lVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the formation of such a book and of the different parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of book open, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the book closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail showing a part of the cover broken away.

In constructing a book in accordance with my invention a leaf or outer cover 1 is provided of a sufficient length to cover the rear end and both sides of a pad of leaves 2 and project a suitable distance beyond the front end thereof. A reinforce or backing 3 is preferably provided for the pad to give it sufficient stiffness or rigidity in handling, and the pad and the reinforce are secured to the leaf or cover 1 at the rear end, preferably permanently, by any ordinary means, as staples 4.

The forward end of the cover for the under side or bottom of the book is extended beyond the forward end of the reinforce 3, which projects forward of the end of the pad 2 and is folded or double thereover, as shown at 5, and secured in position by any suitable .means, preferably a row of stitching 6. The ordinary sheet of carbon 7 when used issecured to the forward or projecting end of the reinforce 3, preferably under the folded end 5 of the cover 1. The cover for the other side or top of the book is preferably provided with a reinforcing-piece of stiff paper 8, similar to the backing 3, which may be pasted thereto and when the book is closed extends from the rear vend of the pad beyond the front thereof. A block- 9, of wood or other suitable material, is secured to the projecting end of the reinforce 8, preferably by means of staples 10 and an adhesive, and is adapted when the book is closed to occupy the space between the projecting ends of the cover and from the front end of the pad to the front end of the leaves of the cover.

The end of the outer leaf 1 is enough longer than the reinforce 8 that it can be wrapped around the block 9, as shown at 11, and thereby give the book a more finished ap pearance and. also afford a convenient place on which to write or print the name of the person or customer to whom the book belongs, as shown at 12 in Fig. 2, or the name can be placed upon the under side or bottom of the book, as shown at 13 in said figure. When the books are to be kept in a horizontal position, as upon each other, or placed in horizontal receptacles, the name is preferably placed directly upon the end, where it will be in full view; but where the books are kept in racks with inclined receptacles, as generally used for this purpose, and are held in an inclined position the name is preferably placed upon the projecting portion of the bottom, which will be as much, if not more, exposed than the front end.

In using a book as above described it is held with the name or block end toward the user, with the top cover opened or thrown back, as shown in Fig: 1, which gives free access to the top of the pad. The carbon is in serted under the top leaf and the entry made in the usual manner. The top leaf is then torn ofl at the line of perforations 14 and given to the owner of the book, while the leaf containing the carbon copy is retained in the book as an account or record, thereby making a combined sales and account book. . addition to this the weight of the block will assist when the book is'held in the hand in holding the free end of the cover down, and

thereby prevent its accidental closing. The

inforce upon the other part of the cover or atthe back of the pad affords sufficient rigidity to the pad to permit of its being written upon when held in the hand.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A sales-book having a folding cover, a pad of leaves between the folds, and secured to one leaf of the said cover; the pad of leaves being shorter than either leaf of the cover and a block secured to the other leaf of the cover, which block substantially fills the space between the pad of leaves and both leaves of the cover when folded, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a sales-book, a cover, a pad of leaves secured to one leaf of the cover and a block to the other, said block being secured to the free end of its leaf and adapted to rest at the front end of the pad when the book is closed.

3. In a sales-book, a cover, a pad of leaves secured to one leaf of the cover at a distance from the front end thereof, and a block secured to the front end of the other leaf and adapted to rest upon the projecting end of the other leaf when the book is closed.

4. In a sales-book, a cover, a pad secured to one leaf of the cover and being shorter than said leaf, and a block secured tothe free end of the other leaf, said block being equal in thickness to the thickness of the pad and substantially as wide as the length of the projecting portion of said first-mentioned leaf of the cover.

5. In a sales-book, a cover, a reinforce and a pad of leaves secured to one leaf of the cover, the reinforce extending in front of the pad and the cover being longer than the reinforce and folded over the end of the same and secured thereto, and a block secured to the free end of the other leaf and adapted to rest upon the projecting portion of said reinforce when the book is closed.

6. In a sales-book, a cover, a reinforce and a pad of leaves secured to one leaf of said cover and a reinforce and a block secured to the other leaf, each leaf of the cover and its reinforce extending beyond the forward end of the pad and the block being adapted to engage With the projecting end of the other leaf when the book is closed.

7. In a salesbook, a cover, a reinforce and a pad of leaves secured to one leaf of the cover and a reinforce and a block to the other leaf, each leaf ofthe cover being longer than its reinforce and folded back over its end, the end of the leaf having the pad being secured by a row of stitches to the reinforce and the end of the other leaf being wrapped around and secured to the block, and a sheet of carbon secured between the stitched end and its reinforce.

8. As a new I article of manufacture, a cover for sales-books comprising a single piece of material folded substantially at its middle to form two leaves, a reinforce on each leaf terminating at a distance from the end and extending to the fold, a carbon-sheet secured to-the free end of one leaf and a block to the other, the projecting end of the leaf having the carbon-sheet being folded over the end thereof and secured by means of a row of stitching and the end of-the other leaf being folded over the block and secured thereto.
