EDGAR J. LOOMIS, OF CAMBRIDGE, NEW YORK.
DISPLAY-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
Application filed Marcil 2. 1906. Serial No. 303,912.
To {t/Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR J. LooMIs, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Cambridge, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures o f reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved seed-display cabinet.
In the drawings, Figure l. shows a vertical sectional view of my cabinet when sitting on a table or form opened to display its contents; Fig. 2, a plan view of the case when open, being a projection taken from Fig. I; Fig. 3, an end view of the cabinet when open; Fig. 4, a sectional view of one of the tilting boxes or trays.
My cabinet consists of three parts numbered 1,' which is the cover, 2, which is the horizontal box portion, and 3 the hanging portion, parts I, 2, and 3 being hinged together so they can assume the positions shown in Fig. l. In the cover l are arranged trays or boxes having only bottoms and a back, as seen in Fig. 4. These trays are hinged to the cover, as indicated at 5, so as to tip forward and assume the positions shown in Fig. I, and this is accomplished by the link IO, as seen in Fig. 3, wherein it is shown to have a slot in it in which rests the stud IO and on which the link slides. A strap 8 is in connection with each tray, as seen in Figs. l., 2, and 3, so that all the trays move together and uniformly. Viewing Fig. 3, when the cabinet is opened link IO draws rearward, following the curve made bylower box 4, and as it is fast to the box it slides on stud IO until the end of the slot is reached, when it ceases to move further, and any further opening movement of the cover I causes it to draw on the lower box 4 and causes all the trays or boxes to tilt forward, as seen in Fig. l. The box is held open by means of the brace 6, as seen.
At 7 is a post with a rounded upper end fastened firmly in position. Then the cover l is shut down, the lower box 4 hits this rounded end, when all the trays are slightly lifted and forced out of their slanting or pitched position and rest in the cover perfectly upright and parallel with back of the cover, and the bottom of each tray rests a trifle above the top of the box next lower to it and forms practically a cover to the tray below it, and this is desired, so that when the cabinet is filled and shipped the contents of the trays cannot escape from them.
The fronts ofthe trays are provided with a wire 4', which carry vertical wires 4 and 43, which form the equivalent of front boards for the trays and make practical boxes of the trays. In these boxes are set the seeds done up in the ordinary paper packages. The link 10 is not shown in Fig. 2, but is distinctly seen in Fig. 3.
The portion of the cabinet marked 2 is preferably left without partitions or other subdivisions in order that it may hold any odds and ends desired. The dependent part 3 has trays fitted to occupy it, as seen in Fig. 2, with the saine wire fronts as areseen in the cover. When set upon a table or form, the cabinet will assume the positon shown in Fig. l. At I I in Fig. l is seen a tennant which fits into a mortise in the part 3 and is used for stiffness and strength. My cabinet is for use among seed growers especially and is made use of by the seedsman at the farm or growing-groundsby iilling cases with a supply of seeds, closing the box, and shipping it to the house that is to act as the retailer, who can thus have furnished to him a convenient display-cabinet takingup but little room and one making a large display of seeds.
Having now described my invention so those skilled in the art may know how to make and use the same, what I claim by Letters Patent isl.. A display-cabinet consisting of a plurality of sections hinged together, the upper or cover section carrying tipping trays arranged to automatically tip when the cover portion is raised and project their contents forward so as to be easily taken from their compartments, said trays also tipping back when the cabinet is closed, the bottom of each tray when so tipped back becoming a cover for the tray beneath it and having means for causing said tipping, the middle or body portion being box-like in form and having hinged thereto a portion that will hang at practically right angles with the middle or body portionvv when the cabinet is open, the hanging por tion carrying compartments or trays substantially as described.
2. A display-cabinet being when closed IIO box-like in form and suitable for shipping purposes with its contents, the cover portion containing automatic tipping trays or compartments when the cover is raised or lowered, and having means for tipping` them7 all arranged so that when the cabinet is opened the trays or compartments tip forward allowing their contents to be easily obtained and when tipped back the bottom of each tray or compartment'becoming the cover for the one beneath it so the contents cannot spill out of said compartment, the body portion having a part thereof hinged thereto and arranged to swing into a position at practically right angles thereto and carrying compartments substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in prese-nce of two Witnesses.
EDGAR J. LOOMIS. Vitnesses:
